Are you trying to add entries to the local PlayBook calendar or to an external account like Gmail or Microsoft Exchange?

Open Calendar
In lower left click the little square with a plus sign
Enter all your information for the calendar appointment
Click the folder icon with a check mark in the upper right corner
That's it

Hi Gene
Make sure you set the appointment to a date in the future. Sometimes its possible to mistakenly create an appointment while you have the wrong day/week selected.
The calendar is really useful. I use it as a super-functioning appointment and task reminder.

I did do it for a future date..I was using Sep 28.....I set the appointment info with DAY selected at the top followed the directions exactly as posted above and entered the data by selecting the file folder at the top right with the check mark. Once that is done, I see nothing of the info on any calendar selection ie monthly, weekly etc..nor is anything shown in the AGENDA or PEOPLE tabs when that is selected..this is really aggrivating

Lucky you! I had given up hoping that Blackberry will develop a way to upload/sync directly from the Outlook Calendar on my PC and had started to enter all appointments etc manually into the native calendar app. Nothing showed in the Calendar, my schedule was apparently "free", but like you the alarm went off when the time for the event was reached.
I had not used Calendar before, but loaded the new OS update last night (2.1.0.1314), so don't know if that is anything to do with it. Anyway, I cannot 'see' anything I try to enter into Calendar, something is wrong - any ideas what?
