After my Blackberry PlayBook shut down and wouldnt restart and/or power-up early last week after only one month of use the question has to be asked "why doesnt RIM allow replaceable batteries which can be removed and replaced with another battery by the PlayBook users themselves?". The reason why I ask this is because I dont want to have to take my BlackBerry Playbook into the retailer to get them to send it away to get repaired once every month (which hasnt happened but based on my current experience is a strong likelihood).
Also, after the 12 month warranty is up will RIM expect me to fork out the cash to get it fixed again? In all likelihood 'YES'!!
It would be alot easier for me to purchase a battery and replace it myself as opposed to sending it away.
Anyone else feel the same??

you can do this with aftermarket parts at retailers online. Ofcourse beware of what you buy online (could be fake) and also you take the risk of doing it yoruself. There are lots of teardowns at ifixit.com or youtube but ocne again u take a risk of messing up.... if your playbook need a battery replacement every month that seems to be an exception. I use mine daily and I've had it since the first day it was released and I am without any issues.

Okay thanks for that ignites. P.s. I use mine daily also before it shut down on me from 6:30am - 9:00pm daily (approximately) how long have you had your PlayBook for?? Also, I will be checking out the ifixit.com and You Tube vids to see if I can get my head around replacing the battery myself - if need be!! Thanks for the reply : )

Boxy7-Have you search the forum for solutions as many have start up or power issues and have posted here frequently.
If none of the solutions work you should send it in to be fixed.
I have my PB since last Dec and so far the battery is fine example.
I do not shut down my PB but leave it on stand by all the time.
I plug it in to charge each night so I can use it the next day.
Once I let it run out of charge and it was a PITA getting the battery to charge up and reboot.
After that I just put it in stand by when not in use.
Occasionally I would do a reboot which is easier.

Hi DC-IT,
Yes I did research on here about the failure of the PlayBook to power on/start up and tried the jump-start thing (2 minutes power up, and 8 seconds for 10 times each off but to no avail). I gave up after doing this numerous times and instead took it in to get repaired.
Also, when I re-charge my BlackBerry PlayBook every night I would fully turn it off and charge it up over night from around 11:00 - 11:30pm until around 6:30am. I now think that as you have had yours going since December of last year without any issues on stand-by mode I think that I may start to do this once I get my PlayBook back (after it is repaired). Hopefully, once I do this it wont shut down on me again. Thanks for the post.

Yes, HUGE problem and no solution from RIM other than to RMA these devices every time they lose a charge
I'm hoping that the person that designed the charging system doesn't also design airliners or elevators
There's a few things that they could have done better, namely
-external access to battery (like a laptop) so you could take them out and charge/swap them easily
-charging system that isn't microprocessor dependent
-redundant power cell for boot process (like the battery in a PC that energizes the CMOS)
-removable media storage (microSD etc) so that critical files could be removed from a dead playbook
-USB access to onboard files as a"mass storage device" that again is not processor dependent, so that
you can read the device memory without booting the tablet (like an iPhone/iPad or even BlackBerry phones)
I've got a dead PlayBook that I cannot charge, been a week now of stack charging, forced reboot, rapid charging etc to no avail, only options left to me now are
-open the device and try to charge the batteries manually (dangerous!)
-send it back to RIM for replacement and lose precious data forever
not good choices at all, and I'm damned angry about this
none of this stuff is ID'd in the product literature, in fact the manual warns you NOT to leave the charger plugged in too long (6+hours), so I've been careful not to leave it on overnight
now I've got a shiny coaster for my desk with important data that I will likely never retrieve because of this **bleep**

Hi dc-it,
I have since got my PlayBook back from the repair shop (which I suspect was a RIM approved repair shop but I am unsure as the place where I got it at - Harvey Normans - sent it away for repairs etc) but yeah ever since I have received it back I have done as you have suggested and had it on stand-by while charging overnight:
As you said:
"I have my PB since last Dec and so far the battery is fine example.
I do not shut down my PB but leave it on stand by all the time.
I plug it in to charge each night so I can use it the next day."
Since doing this I have not had any issue with the PlayBook albeit only being early days etc. Thanks for the advice anyhow dc-it.
Kind regards,

7 months? - warranty - tried everything but call blackberry support presumably. is that why every single post from you is negative? get over it m8
Anyone ask why Apple glue their batteries in ipads, ipods, phones, retina macbooks? No! they are market leaders and they can do no wrong apparently.
When my batt goes (so far so good after 10 months) they are cheap enough to get a new PB.
Of course you charge overnight. Anyone leaving any device on standby for days on end deserves what they get.
