I'm connecting my PlayBook to an Ubuntu computer.  I use USB filesharing which works fine.  The only problem is that every time I plug in the USB cable, the PlayBook sets a new IPv4 address.

Is there any way to give the PlayBook a static USB IP?

Two ways to try after doing some research. You can set up a DHCP reservation on your Router or click connect manually under the WIFI option and the uncheck "Automatically obtain IP address" and set everything up yourself on your playbook

I'm talking about USB not WiFi.

In this case I assume you run DHCP on your Ubuntu system. As you have configured the PlayBook already it's name and MAC address can be assigned to a specific pool of DHCP IP addresses or a specific one as per your preferences.

No, the PlayBook sets its own USB IP address.  The PlayBook itself is a DHCP server.

I can set Ubuntu to have a static USB IP, but that doesn't stop the PlayBook from having a different IP each time a USB cable is connected.

OK Here is how to do it.  Forget the IP address, use Tablet Network Name which will always be the same...

In Storage and Sharing, after selecting Connect to Windows, touch Properties button.

You will find

Tablet Network Name - Use that instead of IP Address in Ubuntu.  (Mine says PLAYBOOK-24B6)

You will then be asked for Username and Password, Mine is "playbook" and the playbook's sharing password. WORKGROUP is left unchanged.

It also turns out that setting the Debug Mode gives you a static IP.

Good news. It worked on my 10.4, the last "good" Ubuntu!
