I was hoping to be able to say this was the solution. He told he's still getting the same error message.
I am going to ask him to repeat the above stes and I am going walk him through it over the phone. This may take a couple of days
If this doesn't work, is there anything else he can do?

If that hasn't worked, try this:
Go to Bridge options on the phone and uncheck syncing of BBM messages.
Disable Bluetooth on the phone.
Back up BBM contacts through Desktop Manager, then uninstall BBM on the phone.
Restart phone and PlayBook, check that no BBM bridge icon appears anymore, then reinstall BBM through App World.
Run BBM on the phone first and accept all agreements, restore contacts if they do not automatically reappear.
Re-enable Bluetooth on the phone and connect Bridge, then try opening BBM on the PlayBook now.
