Proper way to upgrade Blackberry Enterprise Express 5.0.x to 5.0.x?

Is there a secret location of documents for administrators to view, that allow them to be aware of all the touchy little nuances of administering the last few businesses holding onto Blackberry Enterprise Express? I've had enough frustrations as of late that I'm throwing in the towel with my BES support.

I had a number of sites that were working just fine but recently started exhibiting random issues, probably tied to unexplained phenomena, maybe ghosts. These are servers that just sit and no one ever touches them and typically BESx works fine but lately... not so much.

So I decided to update the BESx software from the version they had to the latest version?

So let's say I installed BESX_express_5.0.2 and I've recently downloaded BESX_express_5.0.3.

Can I run the updated version and everything will magically continue to work or do I need to follow the multiple maintenance releases to get to the latest version?

One location I had 5.0.2 (Bundle 14).

I tried a number of updates later and none of them worked, except 5.0.2 MR 1 which brough tme to 5.0.2 (Bundle 25). So I learned that updates are not inclusive of previous updates and you must update every single little update in between (?)

Next I'd expect to install Service Pack 2 Maintenance Release 2 besx502mr2.zip; unfortunately it tells me "The upgrade patch cannot be installed because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Etc."

Is there a roadmap to follow, something intuitive? Thanks in advance. This is annoying.

Re: Proper way to upgrade Blackberry Enterprise Express 5.0.x to 5.0.x?

I think you are downloading the Full BES versions of MR and not the express ones. similar but different.

Click to search the Knowledge Base at BTSC and click to Read The Fabulous Manuals

I have this in my signature to help but maybe you did not see them.

Also there is a sticky/floated post of latest version.

All SP have been culmative and MRs have ben too.

So install latest SP and latest MR you want and get er done.

dont forget to make a backup of the database when doing service packs.

Sometimes updates go wrong because some one updated java or a confilicting windows update is present. The latest SP is not prone to it but the older version are. or they use administrator account instead of BESAdmin which breaks BES>

Re: Proper way to upgrade Blackberry Enterprise Express 5.0.x to 5.0.x?

besx503mr3.exe, it's the BES Express stuff. Won't install.

As an aside, I'm not entirely sure why Research In Motion feels it's necessary to make it so difficult to download their updates. It's like they're doing everything in their power to push people to use other enterprise solutions.

I click support, I get a sales page on Blackberry Enterprise Server. I click support again and I get a different page, none of which has downloads. I typed "service pack download" or simply "download" and I get links to obtaining language packs.

Could you advise me of the secret quick way to access Blackberry Enterprise Express downloads? I'm tired and I'm frustrated, and feeling stupid.

Re: Proper way to upgrade Blackberry Enterprise Express 5.0.x to 5.0.x?

Thanks for the link, bookmarked for future ease of access.

It seems that "Blackberry Enterprise Server v5.0 for Microsoft Exchange" download files also use the "besx" naming scheme in their files, so perhaps I unintentionally downloaded the wrong files with a few files...

However, I already had the "besexpressx503mr2.zip" file in my downloads folder, redownloaded it for kicks, and it won't install.

In Add/Remove programs I have:
Blackberry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange

Version: 5.0.2 MR 1  (Bundle 25)

What should the next file in the upgrade path be?

Thats normal to have that issue. You have to install SP3 first before you install a MR. MRs are made for a specific SP level.

Re: Proper way to upgrade Blackberry Enterprise Express 5.0.x to 5.0.x?

Okay, I did have the right files; but I misinterpreted the intention of these files. The 5.0.3 file is both an update and the full install.

*sigh* but it seems updating is not so simple:

"The setup application determined that you are not running a supported version of Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition. Before you continue the current installation process, you must upgrade the database server to a supported version. For more information about system requirements for BlackBerry Enterprise Server databases, see the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Upgrade Guide."

... guess I'll have to read the Upgrade Guide and I'll update if I have any issues after reading that.

I figured these updates would be a little more... updatey and a little less work.

Thanks for your help thus far!

Not that simple, unfortunately, hosting the database in SQL Server 2000 not Desktop Engine / Express.

I'll have to do more reading then. Thanks for the insight!
