BPS is currently running fine, but I'm forseeing some incompatibilities happening with a planned server hardware upgrade and Domino Upgrade. Ideally, the BPS is running on its own server.
Transfer BlackBerry Professional Software (BPS) system from current server to its own separate server. Objective is to separate the BPS (which can be chatty) from current production servers.
Currently, BPS version 22.214.171.124 is running fine on Domino 7.0.4., Server 2003 32-bit pointing to same server for mail databases, address books and journals
System overview (current as of 20120703)
BPS version 126.96.36.199. running as a service on Domino 7.0.4. 32-bit (Microsoft Server 2003, 32-bit). BPS points to same server for mail databases and roaming directories.
Note: Server currently running BPS is slated for a hardware replacement (Microsoft Server 2008 R2 64-bit) with an intermediate move of Domino 7.0.4., followed by an in-place upgrade to Domino 8.5.3. 64-bit. Objective is to transition BPS to another server before the hardware replacement, as I believe there are incompatibilities between BPS and Microsoft Server 2008.
Clustered pair is a Domino 7.0.4. 32-bit Server (Microsoft Server 2008 R2 64-bit). Note: Hardware has already been replaced with data moved over from old server. Will be doing an in-place upgrade to Domino 8.5.3. 64-bit soon. Possibility of using old server hardware (Server 2003, 32-bit) for the new BPS, as the old server is not doing anything now.
-Is it possible to install a new Domino Server (7.0.4. 32-bit on Server 2003 32-bit) with a new Server name, add it to the current cluster, and install just BPS. Then, transfer over the live BPS from current server to this new server and then disable/remove BPS on current server? Note: I haven't done the in-place upgrades yet to Domino 8.5.3, so wouldn't want this BPS running Domino 8 prematurely.
-Is it possible to transfer over the RIM install (database, etc) from one server to another, if the new server has a different Domino name?
-What kind of Domino Server would it be, if it was only used for BPS - utility?
-If that's possible, could I then do an in-place upgrade to Domino 8.5.x after the two primary servers are completed with server hardware upgrades and Domino Upgrades to 8.5.3. Keep in mind that the BPS server I would be using is running Microsoft Server 2003 32-bit. What would be the newest compatible Domino Version for the new BPS, as the RIM Documentation (written in 2009) appears to have stopped around Domino 8.0.1, I believe.
-Would it be a consideration to then transition the BPS then to BlackBerry Server Express -- maintaining the same hardware -- Server 2003, 32-bit.
Issue is that for either Domino 32-bit or 64-bit, BPS won't install on Server 2008. Looks like I could install Domino 8.0.1. on the old server (Server 2003, 32-bit with BPS version 4.1.4.) http://us.blackberry.com/support/software/professi
Thanks in advance. Just trying to step carefully through this stuff.

Go with BES 5 express. BPS is very old now and does not have many features that current BES has.
not many are running BPS with domino so hard to answer all your questions.

Thanks for reply, knottyrope.
Can I install BES 5 Express (temporarily) on a new Domino 7.0.4. server?
The documentation mentions Domino 8.x and above, but I thought you may have some additional info? I'm not quite ready to do do in-place upgrades of the two current productions servers.

I dont see it on the compatability chart, so it might not work.
