Whats App not working on the Q10

I recently purchased a BB10 and downloaded Whats App from BB World.  I have gone through the settings over and over again to set the sound and the vibrate and nothing happens.  There is no asterix indicating I have a message in my main screen neither does it make a sound or vibrate.

 

I am at my wits end with this because this is how my director communicates with me and I have to be constantly going and check to see if there are messages.

on set-up (in the UK) I had to wait until WhattsApp gave me an activation code by sms, is it the same with you?
