Wow, I finally found someone else with the same problem!
Sorry to disappoint, but I don't have a solution, or even a lead on the problem. But here is what I know, or think I know, about the problem. I play the music player almost exclusively on "shuffle all songs", so I don't know if this occurs in other modes of play. It occurs randomly; sometimes the player will shuffle songs flawlessly for an hour, and then will start to mute songs and continue to do that continuously. The problem does not seem consistently to be triggered by any other event on the phone, like receiving a call or a text message.
It may be influenced by the type of cable that carries the audio out of the device: I find that it never happens in my car, when I have a cable connecting into my car stereo, but almost always happens on my motorcycle, when I am wearing a stereo headset (I have two, a Shure and a Westone, happens with both). I don't think it has anything to do with the mute rocker button on the top of the device; this button stops the track when pushed (it's very easy to depress this button when the phone is is a pocket) but starts at the same place when pushed again (like a pause button). But the problem you describe is different; the track continues to play but the sound is muted until you hit the volume buttons. I also have been able to get the track going by repeatedly hitting the mute rocker on the top of the device.
This has begun happening recently, but I can't directly correlate the start of the problem with my downloading an OS update. I am pretty sure it relates to an update though; I can't imagine this problem is the symptom of aging of the device. But I am willing to be surprised (and if so totally disappointed)!

do you have the latest software? options- about... 3rd line down... v4.7.0.x?
who is your carrier and is it a 9500 or 9530?
is your music on the device memory or on a media card?

I have the same problem. I have a blackberry storm 9530 software version 4.7.0.148 with the music playing from the flash card. My carrier is verison, but that's probably irrelevant.
I've noticed the same problem, it happens when I am doing some activity that I have the Blackberry at my side in a holster. I usually attach it to my hip when I run or bike. When I'm running on a treadmill I usually keep the Blackberry out of the holster, and resting on the treadmill, and it plays fine in these circumstances. It never happens when I'm in my car and it's plugged into my audio jack.
I think it's possible it might have to do with being in the holster, or the motion the device is experiencing when doing some physical activity. I'll try running with the device in my pocket next time to check if it is the motion issue.
Another similar issue that happens when I plug the device into my car audio jack is that the voice dialing option occasionally starts randomly and asks for me to "say a command", stopping my music. I think this might be either due to the fact that the button is being jostled accidentally in my car, or my audio cables are being interpreted as sending an audio signal when they get twisted (this causes some distortion in the audio feed).

Hey All,
I too, am having the same problem. Is there anyone at Blackberry that is actually doing something about this? This is flipping annoying. I ride a motorbike and taking my hand off the handle bars at high speeds to play the song again is not fun or very safe.
I found that it happens a lot when I use the pouch that comes with the storm and/or audio boost is enabled. Also, it doesn’t happen with every song that is played but it does happen to most of them. Is it something to do with the bit rate of the song? Is there a maximum that we should use?
Come on Blackberry. This is ridiculous. This should have been fixed ages ago.

Ditto for me. Same problem. Very annoying.
This never happens when plugged into stereo on my car. It only seems to happend when wearing headset (wired or stereo bluetooth)... which I use a lot when mowing or riding my Harley.
I'll keep en eye on this to see if someone posts a solution.

I'm having this problem also. I first noticed it when I started holstering the phone.(Before then I only had a hard case for it.)
Does that have anything to do with it?

An update for everyone...........
I tried to email RIM at sales@blackberry.com and they told me to email help@blackberry.com which I did. I got an automated reply telling me to check out the forums, check out the technical solution center, log into the partner site or "Obtain Pay-Per Incident Support from Research In Motion (RIM)". Why should I pay for this support??
Just to clarify, my carrier is Vodacom (Vodafone South Africa), so it isn't a carrier problem.
