BlackBerry Storm2 9550 touch screen problem

Hi!

I am a Sri Lanakan. I bought a used Blackberry Storm2 9550, from ebay(from a USA seller) last week. All the functions are working nicely except the touch screen. Can press the touch screen well.(edges and all over the screen) But it get stuck suddenly, and also when am pressing an icon, phone highlights another icon.(as axample, when am pressing contacts in the home screen, phone highlights both contacts and sms). As I guess, at that time phone detects it as multi touch and so I can't press anything. When am reset(battery pull) the phone, it solves the issue for few minutes or hours, afterwards have to face the same issue.

I tried to repair this problem, by putting a piece of paper to the battery cavity, but nothing changed.

My storm is an unlocked(Comes to Verizon, but unlocked later) phone which runs Software version 5. ...... .713. Made in Mexico 5.

Also I wanna the latest update that available for my phone, and the way to update it.

Please use plain text.

Re: BlackBerry Storm2 9550 touch screen problem

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!

Given you description, it sounds like one of two things is happening:

  1. You have some add on apps that you are not closing which are causing the degradation. It is always important to properly close applications when you are done with them. Using the Back or the Red key will not do this -- those leave it to the app to decide what to do...and some will leave themselves resident in memory, consuming resources on your BB, slowing the overall performance. Rather, to close an app, press blackberry_logo.jpg and select "Close" or "Exit"...that will force the application to be closed, freeing up for your new use the resources it was consuming. Some apps will always remain running (typically -- BBMessenger, Browser, Homescreen, Phone, and Messages)...but, you should still close them properly - especially the Browser...if it is left on an active web page, it will not only consume extra resources but battery power as well.
  2. Your BB simply suffers from degradation from use, requiring a regular reboot to clear it up. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure. Some have taken to doing this on a regular basis as a preventive measure...some by obtaining the QuickPull app to automate a simulated Batt-Pull.

To update the OS on your BB, I suggest this procedure:

While written for reload, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload -- it all depends on the device OS package that you download and install to your PC. You can use OS packages from any carrier by simply inserting, between steps 1 and 2, the deletion, on your PC, of a file named VENDOR.XML. You can find, at the top of this forum, a sticky thread that discusses the current OS levels available from various carriers.

You will, however, need to be cautious about your Service Books. If your carrier does not natively support your BB model, you will need to ensure that you have your Service Books back after the update. The restore process should put those back, but if that fails, you'd have to again go through whatever process you went through when you first obtained this BB and activated it on your carrier.

Good luck!

Re: BlackBerry Storm2 9550 touch screen problem

Update -- I just realized that the sticky is not up to date (Xandrex volunteers to try and keep that thead current...sometimes he just doesn't have time). The 9550 is up to .1015 from VZW and at least one other (I think...can't recall specifically).

Good luck!

Re: BlackBerry Storm2 9550 touch screen problem

Hi!

I tried it, but nothing changed. Do you know any other way? If yes please let me know.

I downloaded the software version .834 from Dialog Sri Lanka. But I could't find any file called Vendor.XML or AppLoad.

Software For BlackBerry® Storm 2 (TM) smartphone

BlackBerry Handheld Software v5.0.0.834 (EastAsia)

Package Version: 5.0.0.834
Consisting of:
  • Applications: 5.0.0.497
  • Software Platform: 4.2.0.220
  • File name: 9520_omanodrmjEastAsia_PBr5.0.0_rel834_PL4.2.0.220_A5.0.0.497_Dialog_Sri_Lanka.exe
  • File size: 127.03MB
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

This is the update file that I downloaded. Can't I download the update file directly to my phone through wifi or 3G connection.(like in Nokia phones) If you have time, please send me a link of the latest software version that I can download.

Do you think that updating the software will solve my touch screen problem?

Re: BlackBerry Storm2 9550 touch screen problem

I tried update my Storm2 9550 with BlackBerry Desktop Software. Though am running with the version .713 it says "There are no BlackBerry Device software update available." I am really confusing with all those troubles. I used lots of Nokia phones earlier to this, but never faced to problems like this.

Re: BlackBerry Storm2 9550 touch screen problem

That version you downloaded is .497...older than you are already running. Plus, you must find and delete VENDOR.XML and use the procedure I gave you if you wish to use a different carriers OS. That is the way it works. VENDOR.XML must be in or near the folder that LOADER.EXE is in. I know it's there, but you should be using a newer OS...not an older one. Don't use the Desktop Software except for taking a backup. Don't use it to try and update, it won't work with this method. I wish it was easier for you, but you chose a BB, so you must deal with it.

Re: BlackBerry Storm2 9550 touch screen problem

Thank you very much for your replies.

Do you have any other ideas about my touch screen problem? That is the main issue, that I want to solve asap. Do I need to repair it through a spacialist? Is it a hardware fault or a software fault? Will it solve by upgrading my software version, or by restore to factory settings.

What is the meaning of the hard reset? Is it equal to the Battery Pull? Will it solve my problem?

I herewith attached an image. Please answer to those also. Pls send me a link if you can, to download the latest update.

Very sorry if am troubling you. Please help me. Coz am new to BlackBerry. Thanks a lot.

Any of those remedies could work. Without hands-on, it's impossible for me to know anything 100%. The best advice I can give you is to update your OS to the latest version (.1015). It very well could be that, as a used device, it is damaged by the prior owner and it will never work for you. As I say, it's impossible to tell at this internet-distance.

In my view, yes...but there are others in the world who believe differently. The best reference is the official one:

  • KB02141How to reset a BlackBerry smartphone

Most of us who've dealt with this for a while include that power should be ON when pulling the battery.

Again, impossible to say at this internet-distance.

The first one (top right) is the GPS indicator...I can't recall exactly which icon of that means what...I suggest you obtain the user guide for your BB from here:

The second one is only present if your carrier has pushed out a wireless update to you. You say it's the"easiest way" for you...I would add that it is the MOST DANGEROUS way. You see, via this update method, on on-device backup of your data is taken, which is restored after the update (the update effectively wipes out everything). That backup is a 1-time use file...if anything goes wrong in the update process, all of your data is lost forever. The update method I've given you is the best method as 1) it instructs you to first take a manual backup and 2) the process itself will also take another backup...and both of these backup files are stored on your PC, and can therefore be used later as a restore source since they are not 1-time use files.

You already have the link...it is in the instructions I gave you to perform the update...it is the official download portal for all carriers. You simply navigate through to the carrier of your choice and download their OS package for your model number.

You might also benefit from this:

And also the public KB's that I often mention...they are completely searchable by you...you don't need me to do searching for you:
