Extremely laggy keyboard on 9530 w/OS 5

I have a Storm 9530 with Verizon Wireless, running OS v5.0.0.328. For a while now I've been experiencing extreme lagginess with the on-screen keyboard when my device has been on for a few hours. The worst is if I hit the Alt or Sym key: it can take 3-5 seconds for the alternate/symbol keypad to pop up, getting laggier the longer it's been on. Clearing the Event Log (which I have set to Warning) can sometimes halve the delay temporarily. I basically have to perform a battery pull every twelve hours to keep the keyboard working appreciably fast, which is very inconvenient.

I've removed nearly all of my applications in an attempt to troubleshoot the issue, leaving only the RIM apps App World, Application Center, Maps, BrickBreaker, Google Talk, MemoPad, Password Keeper, Tasks, Live Messenger, and Word Mole, and the third-party Google Sync. With this, my memory usage isn't too bad - about 32 MB free after a battery pull, 24 MB after it's been on for about a day. But my keyboard continues to lag.

Any ideas on how I can get the keyboard working appreciably fast?

Re: Extremely laggy keyboard on 9530 w/OS 5

1.  To prevent freezing or lagging/slow response on any BlackBerry, the most important practice you can adopt is to be sure to CLOSE applications when you are finished using them.

If you just hit the red "end call" key to go back to the home screen the application actually stays open and running in the background. If you do this repeatedly you will have lots of apps open and consequently your memory will get used up. Lack of memory is the biggest reason your BlackBerry slows to a crawl or locks up. If you get into the habit of actually using the menu key to close the applications this will at least slow down this memory-clogging process. You still may have to do a battery pull or use the "Quickpull" app once in a while when things get slow.

To check what applications are running on your device in the background, press the Menu key then choose Switch Applications. You will see the icons of each application there.

So now, check your applications running in the background. There are commonly four or five applications that will always be running (Messages, Call Logs/Phone, BlackBerry Messenger, Homescreen, and the Browser; there are other third party applications such as BeeJive, and BlackBerry Alerts which will also run in the background which you cannot close if you want them to operate). Make certain that the browser is NOT on an active webpage (open the browser and choose Menu > Close). Close any other applications that do not need to be running (the camera or a game you were playing or Google Maps).

2. Upgrade your OS to the latest official release.

Device operating system releases are "released" by specific carriers once they have certified and trained their support techs, but still, you are able to load to any carrier's same model by following the instructions below.

See the link below, for the download and simple installation instructions.

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=6C3CF77D52820CD0FE646D38BC2145CA

Do a backup of your device first, using Desktop Manager > Backup. Close Desktop Manager upon completion.

1. Download the OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

Re: Extremely laggy keyboard on 9530 w/OS 5

I do close my applications religiously; I'll usually have only the usual four or five apps (Home, Phone, Messages, Browser) visible in the app switcher.

I'm running the latest OS version available to me through Verizon, though I didn't know I could install OSes from other providers on my device - I'll try the latest OS I can find and see what performance is like.
