Re: Official Verizon BlackBerry Storm Device Software Upgrade

Thanks.  The slowness of the web doesn't get me too much - I live in downtown Boston, and have found the 3G connection to be quite fast generally.  However, the camera and video camera are all but useless (and I try to use these a lot, as I have a toddler).  My dream was to 'de-dorkify' into one device that could be my blackberry, camera, video camera (I don't need high resolution stuff), and GPS.  All of these extra things (camera, video, GPS) are so laggy and buggy (and the video camera so frequently freezes up, losing the video I'm taking), that I find them all but useless.  If these are fixed with software upgrades, I'll count the Storm a success (I knew when I bought it in November it would take a few months to work out the bugs, so I'll be understanding re: software upgrades).  If not, it'll be a bitterly dissappointing failure for me, in promising a convergence that it couldn't really deliver.  We'll see.

Hey Krypto

I downloaded the upgrade from Vodafone Greece, all 116 MB of it onto my Windows pc, ran the software, but when i connected my Storm to the Desktop Manager / Application Loader it doesn't show the Upgrade is available. I'm still on Version 4.7.0.78 and the Upgrade is for 4.7.0.100. Searched all over the pc, it shows the software upgrade is sitting there (somewhere) but I dont know why it won't upgrade it on the handset. Many hours of hair-pulling last night!! :manmad:

All this, on top of my Mac - Blackberry communication issues....

Hey raulcos, are you on Vodaphone Greece?  If so, and if your data plan is unlimited (or if you have a lot of data), try doing a wireless upgrade.  Go to Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Update.  Other things to try are restarting the computer (this is often required to properly complete the install), and if you're not on Vodaphone Greece, just try the regular leaked OS and don't forget to delete the Vendor.xml file (this may prevent updating the phone).

:smileyhappy:

Re: Official Verizon BlackBerry Storm Device Software Upgrade

Hey Krypto,

Greece? lol I'm in South Africa, the service is provided by Vodafone in partnership with our local cellphone beast Vodacom. Here we get charged for every bit of data that gets downloaded, that's in addition to the insanely high contract packages they tie us in to for 2 years. To make matters worse, our data usage is capped by our Internet service provider at 2 GB. I'm already over my cap for this month...:smileysad: so i think I'll just wait until they release the update here locally - the Storm was only launched here 2 weeks ago. Yeahh we're a little bit behind the rest of the world!

Re: Official Verizon BlackBerry Storm Device Software Upgrade

Well, that's why you had the problem... Vodafone is specific to each country, so Vodafone Greece is different from Vodafone UK, and different from your version of Vodafone (even though it's all still Vodafone).  If you want to install it, just Google 4.7.0.100 for the 9500, and look for the leaked version.  Use the instructions I provided here and don't forget to install the Vendor.xml file (you can also try the version from Vodafone Greece, but you will also need to delete the Vendor.xml file with that one too).

All of this will still need to be done using a Windows PC, but it should work.  And don't forget to restart the computer after installing the OS!  Plus, maybe just to be safe, start from scratch by going to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (for Windows XP) or Control Panel > Programs & Features (for Windows Vista) and uninstall any Blackberry device software listed before doing anything else.

Hope that works out for you!

Re: Official Verizon BlackBerry Storm Device Software Upgrade

They have to say that as they will not support an unofficial update (as they haven't tested it thoroughly to ensure it's at a high enough level of quality for their phones and their reputation - they've been slammed pretty good already for releasing the phone too early so they don't want to take any chances that the next release is going to have issues either).  That's why I stated that you have to do this at your own risk.

If you don't want to take this risk, don't do any install until Verizon officially releases their version.  And if you do try the install and something goes wrong, be aware that you will need to downgrade back to the official version before you go to Verizon with any issues or concerns.

Re: Official Verizon BlackBerry Storm Device Software Upgrade

Last time a european Vodafone subsidiary released an OS, it was 4.5 on curve and the US had to wait 4 months for a US carrier to release the same OS. :smileywink:

Just saying..... don't shoot the messenger.

Re: Official Verizon BlackBerry Storm Device Software Upgrade

I have a new blackberry storm running version 4.7.0.75 and I am on a BES server.  I understand the BES server may be holding the update for my phone (at least that's what I gather)  I've tried the blackberry desktop software and it does not find any updates for my application and when I try an over the air upgrade I get an "Unable to send request for available upgrades" notifcation.

Can anyone please help.....

Re: Official Verizon BlackBerry Storm Device Software Upgrade

dfahrney : that is not entirely correct.

if you are on BES, there are two possibilities :
  • either the IT of your company do the upgrade for you (that requires accessing your device physically)
  • or you do the upgrade by going on the download website and download yourself the OS file. Then you have to install that OS on your computer, then have it transfered to your device using Desktop Manager.
