PAN Services

I just installed a Belkin Bluetooth USB adapter in my desktop so I can sync the Storm automatically via the Bluetooth connection without a USB cable.  After much trial and error I've got the connection working and it syncs using the BB Desktop Manager.  Seems to work ok for now.

The setup for the Belkin Bluetooth dongle created a Bluetooth Network Connection in my Network folder on my desktop computer but it has an "X" through it indicating it's not working.  When I right-click the icon and select "View Bluetooth Network Devices" I get a dialog that says it found no bluetooth devices which support PAN Services even though the BB is connected via Bluetooth to the desktop computer.

From what I've read a PAN Service supported device should be able to use this network connection to get to the internet and use the faster cable internet connection used by the desktop computer.  My cell signal at my home rarely gives me 2 bars and browsing using the Storm is dreadfully slow.

So, my question is, does the Storm support Personal Area Network Services or should I stop trying to get that to work?

I'm really curious about that to. Using a storm now. My data plan is not that big, so if i can use internet via Bleutooth it would be great.

Using the storm for 2 days now, and i love it. Before i had an 8820. Also a nice bb with wifi. Thats on thing i miss on the storm.

thanks.

Re: PAN Services

Blackherrie, I have been unable to confirm whether the Storm supports PAN one way or the other. I can only assume it does not since it's not even mentioned in any of the BB documentation. Secondly, from what I have read, Vista severely hinders Bluetooth support to the point where you must jump through hoops to get it working.  Even so, I tried the hoops and still did not get PAN working under Vista.  As an experiment, I also tried installing my Bluetooth dongle on an XP Pro machine but still was not successful getting PAN working with the Storm.

I've come to the conclusion that I should stop trying to get PAN working.  Lack of Storm wifi support makes me wish I had gotten the Bold instead. Other than that I love my Storm.

Re: PAN Services

Blackberry Storm does not support PAN (as a Bluetooth profile) it's does however support DUN (Bluetooth Dial Up Networking), which allows you to use your phone as a Modem (known as PAM NOT PAN), this allows you to connect your Computer to the internet via Bluetooth through your phone's internet connection.  You can not use this to connect your phone to your PC and use your PC's internet.  There is however, still the Vista issues noted in the other post, depending on your phone model.

Re: PAN Services

I successfully tested the DUN technic right after I got my Storm last year and it worked on the first attempt. However, this service is an additional monthly fee which Verizon made extremely easy to activate during the setup process. Needless to say, I cancelled the service upon seeing the first $30 monthly charge hit my bill just for the DUN service.
