What good is the tethering ability if Verizon will not allow it?........They mention it as an attribute to the BB but........
If I were to unlock my BB and/or get rid of Verizon would I be able to tether directly to the RIM (mandatory service dictated by Verizon to use a BB) server for about the same price?

No matter what you do, you need a carrier...and RIM is not a carrier. Hence, the carriers determine what services they will offer and at what fees. So, I think the answer to your question is no.

Verizon allows you to tether your computer to your BlackBerry. They just charge you for the ability to do it. Verizon refers to it as VAccess. When you add the tethering capability to you cell plan you are allowed 5G of date per month. I use it all the time when I take my lap top to a client’s office, or the internet goes out at home. I believe the charge is about $ 20.00 per month.
