Uncaught Exemption?

I have been getting a message on my home screen about 2-3/daily and it says "uncaught exemption: java.lang.NullPointerException.  Does anyone know what this means?  Does this mean I have a virus?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Uncaught Exemption?

Hi!

No -- it's not a virus. It's an instability in the OS, brought on by prolonged use between hard reboots. To clear, do the batt-pull reboot -- with power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then insert the battery and replace the cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot (~5 minutes). See if things have cleared up.

As prevention, it's a good idea to do this on a regular basis. There is also a free app called QuickPull (http://www.blackberrynews.com/2009/04/09/quickpull-version-20-for-the-blackberry/) that purportedly does the same thing, but without the physical battery removal...and it can be scheduled. I have mine doing so every day at 3am.

Cheers!

Re: Uncaught Exemption?

On my first upgrade from .75 to .99 i had that problem when trying to use SMS. That disppeared upgrading to .103 and to .113. Battery pull never solved it. Perhaps you should upgrade to .122

Re: Uncaught Exemption?

Anything beyond your carriers' production OS (which, for VZW, remains at .75) is at one's own risk. Expect the unexpected and report here (in the appropriate thread) the issues you discover...but, whatever you do, don't expect perfection. ....IMHO....

Re: Uncaught Exemption?

Sometimes these issues can also be brought on by applications for the same reasons that sdgardne stated before.  In some cases, deleting and reloading your apps can help, but if that doesn't it likely is indeed a Operating System issue.  In this case, you can try reloading your operating system on your phone following a complete wipe and then reload each of your apps.  Don't forget to backup your phone's data before doing this as wiping your phone and reloading the OS will remove all your personal data.

This should help in the event that the problem is doing to corrupted files.
