ok
go to your PC
search for Blackberry Desktop Manager on Google
download it from the Blackberry site to your PC
connect your device to the manager
do a back up of all your data, contacts, emails everything
then click applications on the PC
you will see BBM on there
if it is installed, click to un install it and uninstall any other stuff you dont use like all the languages and stuff that will never be used
then update.
when the phone comes back then go to applications again and click to reinstall the BBM
when it comes back it should be working again !!

I have plugged the phone into a desktop but there is not a folder called applications?

Yea, I have no idea why and what you're doing.

 

I have you the directions above to restore BBM; you only responded "...didn't work" so I suspect some part of the process failed but since you offer no detail, just stating "...didn't work" allows me no way to help you further.
