Greetings,
I'm trying to fix the missing App World icon problem by updating my device software. A Knowledge Base article says I need to update to version 6.0.0.706 (I have version 6.0.0.415) through my wireless service provider (Telus Mobility). Telus Mobility just has a link to the BlackBerry download page. After downloading and running the file, I get a message saying "There are no BlackBerry Device Software updates available".
Did I do something wrong? Or is there another way to get version 6.0.0.706?
Thanks,
Shane.

Hello,
The simplest way is to, on a PC (you cannot do this on MAC):
1) Uninstall, from your PC, any BB OS packages
2) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed
3) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:
4) If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
5) Launch the Desktop Software and connect your BB...the software should offer you the OS package you installed to your PC. If, during the process, your BB presents a "507" error, simply unplug the USB cord from the BB and re-insert it...don't do anything else...this should allow the install to continue.
Don't forget to backup.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

The Telus Mobility download page only shows my currently installed version (6.0.0.415) and the previous version (6.0.0.286). How do I get version 6.0.0.706?
Thanks,
Shane.

OK, so it looks like I'll need to download a package from another service provider.
Are there any differences between the packages, besides the vendor.xml file? For example, are there differences by country? MTS Mobility has version 6.0.0.522, but a service provider from another country (Sprint) has a more recent version (6.0.0.706).
Thanks,
Shane.

I had to look through all the service providers, and found that Sprint is the only carrier in North America that offers the most recent version (6.0.0.706), so I downloaded their package.
When I started the update, I was immediately hit with two urgent messages: "do not disconnect your device or interrupt this process" and "the device must be restarted for the changes to take effect. Please restart now". I wasn't sure what to do. The installation was busy with messages saying "loading module...", so I clicked "Restart Later". Hopefully that was the correct choice.
After the installation was complete, I noticed that two icons were missing from the All screen. Also, my App World Wishlist is gone.
I also received a notice that upgrades were now available for five different apps—which I've since upgraded. However, the upgrade notice for App World itself is gone. How do I upgrade App World? Clicking Options > Device > Application Management shows me the version number (4.0.0.55). Searching App World for "App World" doesn't return any results from RIM. Clicking App World > My World > Upgrades says "You do not have any upgrades for applications from App World".
Thanks,
Shane.

OK...but you are not restricted to North America only carriers, either.

The first immediate message is normal...the process is doing a lot of read/write between your computer and the device...disconnecting it would interrupt the process and potentially rendering your BB useless (though, normally, still recoverable...just via some even more drastic means). However, the immediate presentation of the prompt to restart is odd...was that presented on your computer or on the device? I'm guessing on the computer since you also say it was busy with other things...at that point in the process, I do not recall ever seeing that particular message.

So, one of those missing was MySpace? But you are not sure what the other one is? It may have been a teaser icon that had been included in your old OS that is not included in your new OS. It's pretty much impossible to know...only someone who knows exactly what you had laid out on your homescreen could know.
And...I think that the "Wishlist" feature, along with gifting, has been removed from more recent AppWorld versions. Therefore, the conclusion I'd draw is that, in your old OS level, you had an older AW version and had not updated it. When you loaded the new OS, it included a newer version of AW, one that does not include that.

You can install AppWorld by, going via your BB Browser, to this URL
You may or may not need to first remove the currently installed version.
Cheers!

The message was on the computer, but I'm not sure if the "device" meant the computer or the phone.

The new OS still had version 4.0.0.55 of App World, which supports the Wishlist feature. All of my selections were gone, though.

I've installed App World 4.0.0.65 and the icon didn't disappear after rebooting. Awesome.
Thanks so much for your help. I'm glad to finally get this fixed. The new version (4.0.0.65) still supports Wishlists, so I'll have to rebuild my lists from scratch, but at least I can update other apps again.
Regards,
Shane.
