That is not typically how BlackBerry devices work. To exit out of an app and return to the homescreen, you can press the back arrow until you return to the home screen. To get back to the homescreen without exiting the apps, you can press the End key, but be aware that this will not close the apps and instead will simply move it to the background.
One thing to be aware of is that some applications (but not all) require you to actually press the menu key and click on Close or Exit to close the application fully. You may be able to change some of these settings within the application settings.
