so now that i know where the icons that i need are located...
how do you edit icon .png's and maintain image fidelity? i tried opening and editing the images in mspaint.exe so i could achieve the right size for the look that i want, but mspaint.exe doesn't retain the image transparency surrounding the individual icons that make up the whole of the icon list image, for example, "phone-volume-icons-xxx.png". i don't think any of the programs i have will do that. so the question is, once again, what is the best image editor (or .png specifically) for editing icons for themes?
thanks!

You need a more advanced graphics editor that supports palette transparencies and the png format. I personally like Paint Shop Pro, but if you're looking for free, check out GIMP for Windows (http://www.gimp.org), often called the "Free Photoshop". Learning curve is steep, so you could also try PhotoScape (http://www.photoscape.org), which is earning high marks for a free photo editor (I have not personally used this, but it looks like it will do the trick and is probably more straightforward than GIMP). Good luck.

Gimp takes some getting used to but works very well, especially since it's free. Eventually I stepped up to photoshop but I used Gimp with great results for over a year.
