App World Problem

Hello everybody,

I'm new here and I have a problem with my Blackberry Torch 9800. Every time I try to upgrade an app, does not matter which one, it always tells me: "There was a problem installing (the name of the app). Please try again later." .

I've already done the cache reset of AppWorld, but I still cannot be able to upgrade any of the apps installed.

Please somebody help me because I'm going crazy !!

Re: App World Problem

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

Here is a KB that discusses that error:

  • KB33286 "There was a problem installing <app name> please try again" occurs when downloading applications from BlackBerry App World

Unfortunately, it contains nothing useful...therefore, I recommend you try this sequence:

1) Remove AppWorld from your BB

  • KB10040 How to view or remove installed applications on a BlackBerry smartphone
  • If it requests that you reboot the BB, do so

2) Do a Batt-Pull reboot (power on, remove battery, wait, insert battery, wait), even if redundant to the one you did in step 1.

3) Install (on your BB) a fresh copy of AppWorld

4) Do another Batt-Pull reboot

5) See if it now works.

Good luck and let us know!

Re: App World Problem

Thanks alot sdgardne....but unfortunatly after i did all the steps it keeps on telling me the same thing.

Would you recommend a reboot of the memory or something like that?

I am now concerned that you didn't actually do as I recommended...since there were at least 2, and perhaps 4, reboots involved in the process I gave you. Please confirm...

Re: App World Problem

Oh no I did all the Batt-Pull reboots, the only one that i did not do was the one after the installation of the app world, cuz the phone did not ask me but i still did the last Batt-Pull reboot.

By asking you the memory reboot i meant if you believe it is necessary to format my entire phone.

Re: App World Problem

Oh...OK...since you had said "reboot" with "memory", I was not sure what you meant.

Performing a WIPE on your BB might help...or it might not. I have no way to predict the outcome. It is a viable thing to attempt, but I cannot know what the result will be. Given the content of the official KB, I'd actually be more inclined to recommend you report this to your mobile service provider so that they can escalate to BlackBerry and possibly collect log information from your BB. That, of course, will take much time.

So it's your choice as to how to proceed. A WIPE, an OS reload, an OS upgrade, and many other things may or may not be useful in fixing the situation...but they are all viable things to attempt.

Good luck!

Ahhh...now I believe we are uncovering more evidence of an underlying problem. Perhaps OS corruption, perhaps other things.

Yup...and they would be the same things to try regarding the AW problem as well as the new problem. The first thing to do, though, is ensure you get a proper and full backup...you can find instructions for that in the link in my auto-sig on this post.

I recommend that you attempt to boot into Safe Mode:

  • KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in Safe Mode

It may take you multiple attempts to get the ESC key sequence (press/release/hold) correct, so be patient. When successfully into Safe Mode, see what happens.

If the behavior ceases, then think carefully...what happened just before this behavior started? A new app? An update? A Theme? Something else? Think carefully as the smallest change could be causal...and attempt to undo whatever that was.

If the behavior continues, then proceed.

The next thing to try is the device WIPE:

  • KB14058 How to delete all data and applications from the BlackBerry smartphone using the Security Wipe option

Failing that, the OS reload steps follow.

At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for many models. If they include your model, then please use those as reference as you proceed. Otherwise, you will have to dig through the official download portal for OS packages for your model:

From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:

Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  • C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.

You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.

You may also want to try this procedure to perhaps narrow down the precise causal item:

  1. Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
  2. If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
  3. If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
  4. Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
  5. If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
  6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents

When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.

If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.

If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software

Good luck and let us know!

Re: App World Problem

Thanks again for your help and the patience you had :smileywink:

I managed to solve my problem by entering on safe mode and delete a few apps that I didn't even know I had...probably they were installed automatically with others or something like that...but now I'm finally able to use the AppWorld again without troubles :smileywink:

Cheers !!
