Blackberry Torch 9800 will not re boot

My blackberry torch will not reboot after plugging it into my pc to do a back up. This seems to have happened since the update that was showing available. I have tried taking the battery out and rebooting it but all I get is a flashing red light at the top. I have replugged it into the pc and it connects if I search for updates and then hit the repair button. It gives me a warning message that says that I will have to connect ot my device wirelessly to but when I go to my blackberry account it tells me the wireless is switched off. Can someone help please, my life is on this phone and I need it for work, desperate!!!

Re: Blackberry Torch 9800 will not re boot

Hi and Welcome to the Community!

From what you describe, I think you should conduct a clean OS reload...something may have gone wrong in that update, and a clean reload should cure it. Be sure you have a solid backup first...check the link in my auto-sig on this post for recommendations in that regard.

At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for many models. If they include your model, then please use those as reference as you proceed. Otherwise, you will have to dig through the official download portal for OS packages for your model:

From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:

Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  • C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.

If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • KB19915How to perform a clean reload of BlackBerry smartphone application software using BlackBerry Desktop Software

Good luck and let us know!

Re: Blackberry Torch 9800 will not re boot

Hi, Thanks for this but after having read through the notes I think maybe it is my fault that it is not working as it says that you must not unplug the device whilst the update is going on. It tells me that I may render the device unusable by doing this so I guess that is what has happened. Any ideas how to get round this one please. Thanks in anticipation

Re: Blackberry Torch 9800 will not re boot

Oh...you didn't quite reveal that rather critical fact (unplugging during the process) in your first post...yes, a very dangerous thing to do. Here are some articles that might help you:

Given the severity of the situation you've caused, you will likely need to override the "automatic" nature of these tools...they may say just to install the Desktop Software alone and/or to use the Update Website. Don't do either of those...instead...

1) Uninstall, from your PC, any and all BB OS packages

2) Make sure you have the BB Desktop Software already installed

3) Download and install, to your PC, the BB OS package you desire:

4) If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
  • C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML

Now try performing the steps in those recovery articles, but don't use the Update Website...use the Desktop Software instead (now that it will be customized with your intended OS package, that will override it's "automatic" nature).

Good luck!

Re: Blackberry Torch 9800 will not re boot

While waiting for one of the links to download I plugged the phone in again and the desktop software told me the download had not worked and I should - unplug, wait 10 seconds, replug and retry. It has now booted up the phone and it has loading the application modules. The phone has rebooting and I am now restoring the back up that I took earlier so I have my fingers crossed that it will work ok. Thanks so much for all your help and I hopefully won't be back on here again for a while.

Re: Blackberry Torch 9800 will not re boot

It sounds like you may have gotten lucky...in some circumstances, there is actually a sequence where disconnection and reconnection are the proper steps to take (when, during the process, a 507 error presents on the device screen). It sounds indeed like you've gotten lucky indeed.

Cheers!
