BlackBerry® Torch™

My new BlackBerry Torch arrived at the weekend, so I am just finding my way around it.

For some reason, my phone will not display my chosen message when the screen is locked. 

Following the user manual instructions (ie Home screen > options > display > message on lock screen, then typing a message, then pressing "save" on the BlackBerry key) does not seem to work.  When I press the lock key on the top left of the phone, the only message that appears is the standard message "Screen is locked.  Press the Lock button to unlock".  There is no sign of the message I typed and saved.

Please could someone advise? 

I am not sure if this facility works only with certain carriers (I am on pay as you go with Orange.)

that only shows up when locking with a password, knot the keypad lock

I put in my phone number and shipping address in case a nice person wants to return it for a reward.
