Can anyone help me retrieve all my old text messages and e-mails from my old 9800 Blackberry that I no longer use.

Retieve how, and to use how?
What's your email server?
Does the device work and power up?
Or do you have a backup of the device?
Need details from you.

I use hotmail
The device works but i no longer have a sim card as i changed to an iphone and the cards are different
I have a back up on my laptop desktop but can't seem to get into it for some reason

That backup is intended for restore to the device.
An alternative to extract your messages from that backup *ipd file would be to use MagicBerry from MenaStep, you can download it to your PC for free.

Oh, you never said anything about a Mac.
You'll need a PC.

It is great that you have a backup of your device. You can extract the files off the backup and access them on the computer with Blackberry Backup Extractor, the Mac version. It reads both IPD and BBB backups and supports even encrypted backups (you need to know the backup password, of course).
