Hi Thanks for this.

Got old dusty SIM found in the back of a desk drawer and placed it in device

When Get to Advanced Options --> SIM I see ID89441100651621xxxx

Phone Number : 07720xxxxxxx (Line1)

 When I type mepd ... nothing else appears

You should see the very same screen with the active or inactive state of the network.

 

I don't know what you should do with that device.

Instead of trashing it, see if there are any of the 'cell phones for soldiers" or electronic recycling places nearby. Of course, do a security wipe on it first.
