The keyboard backlight remains on even when the slider is closed. While it probably will not drain much power (LED backlight?), it certainly should turn off to conserve the battery when the slider is closed.
Do you observe the same on your 9800?

Woof, does your backlight not go off after a certain period of time, as you've set in the Screen/Keyboard settings? Try changing those settings to another timeout, like from 30 seconds to 20 seconds and save, and see what happens.

The backlight of the screen turns off after the preset period of time. However, the keyboard is lighted when the screen is on and the slider is in the closed position. Unless the screen backlight and the keyboard light cannot be control independently, the keyboard backlight shoud always be off when the slider is closed. Try take a peek at the keyboard when the slider is closed. As long as the screen is on, you will notice the backlight of the keyboard is on even if the slider is closed.
