Lost items after updating

Hi I'm new to the Blackberry World--I love my Blackberry Torch 9800 phone.  The problem I'm having is, whenever I update my phone I lose some items from it--is this normal and if not what can I do to prevent this?

Please use plain text.

Re: Lost items after updating

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!

Can you please be more explicit -- what, exactly, is lost? Further, how, exactly, are you doing these updates?

Thanks!

Re: Lost items after updating

OK...let me try to help you understand the level of detail we need...from what you've said so far, I still can think of about 10 different ways to go...

  • "Computer" -- PC or MAC?

  • On the "computer", are you using the Web Browser Update page? Are you using the RIM desktop software? Are you using LOADER.EXE?

And that's just a hint of the possibilities...hence, I need you to provide explicit (step by step is good!) information of exactly how you are doing these updates.

Thanks!

Re: Lost items after updating

OK. we're getting closer now.

First off -- you lost one app and the data associated with it... I hardly consider that "wiping out" your BB.

Second -- depending on the level of the update (major or minor), it is common for apps to not be restored. You see, it is up the app developer, not RIM, to ensure that their app is compatible with a device model as well as OS levels. If the app was too old for the updated OS you installed, then it rightly was not restored to your BB as it would not have run anyway.

Third -- it is always a good idea to keep record of all add-on apps that one obtains, including the source for re-installation as well as any activation keys that are needed for it to function.

Fourth -- it is never a good idea to truly restore an add-on app after an OS update. IMHO, it is always best to do a clean app re-installation so that one can be sure that is is functioning properly with the OS.

Fifth -- it is always a good idea to keep backups of all your personal data so that, in the event of any catastrophic failure, you have something from which to restore.

So, what you should now do is go to your records of the source of your missing app and re-install it. Depending on how it managed it's data, you may or may not get the data back.

Good luck!

Re: Lost items after updating

sdgarne is correct, third party application data is rarely backed up and/or reinstalled after an upgrade of the OS.

The developer of your mygrocery app will need to fix that in their own code. I've noticed over the past year, the "better" developers will include a method or backup/restore of their application data to the media card. You should ask your developer for this feature.
