To keep your messages for a longer peroid make sure that setting is correct and set to maximum period .For that :
On your Home screen Click Message Icon > Menu Key > Options > Message Display and Actions > Change the Days To Keep Messages field to Forever and then save.

In addition if your Device undergo Low memory then also your messages may be deleted ,Have a look at this Article Of Knowledge Base :

Once text or email messages are deleted you can't restore them back unless you have your device backup either by BlackBerry Desktop Software or by BlackBerry Protect .So do regular backup of your device.
