Need advice on lockout. Please help!

I am one of those people having issues with my phone not accepting my password. Before I realized what was happening I was at my final attempt. I have heard so many different suggestions about what to enter I am thoroughly confused.  My passcode is 1122.  When I had reached a certain try and entered blackberry as required i tried again to enter my code but it was coming up wwee (the corresponding letters)instead of the usual asterisks. I was told to leave it at that and not use alt to get the 1122. I was also advised to do this through blackberry desktop instead of the phone itself but I don't see what difference that makes.  I'm too chicken to do that as its my last attempt before losing everything.  If you have any tried and true advice I would so greatly appreciate it. I am almost resolved to the fact that I will lose all data so I would like to know if  it be advisable to remove my SD and SIM card prior to my last attempt. I don't really know how much is stored on there but I would like to save what I could.  Thanks!
