The backup files are of a proprietary format, intended solely as the source of data for restore to a BB. As such, they are not human-readable on the computer. But, there are plenty of 3rd party computer apps out there that can parse and present the data to you in a human readable format...search (e.g., Google) and ye shall find, I am sure.
