Hi all.
I love the torch, hands down the best blackberry ever produced. No lag, no problems except for this bug "Uncaught exception: java.land.IndexOutofBoundsException" that appears anytime I try to open my sms inbox. I have to go to compose sms on one of my contacts in the address book or wait for a text notification on my home screen to open the inbox....
Anybody know how i can fix this issue? I have tried multiple battery pulls and my device came pre-loaded with the most up-to-date OS from Telus. This didn't appear as a result of any backup, app installation, deletion etc, it just appeared the other day!
Thank you in advance for any help!
Jason

Hi there Jason,
It sounds to me like your device has managed to get a little software glitch. Since the phone is new, you could simply take it in to Telus for assistance, or if you would like to try to resolve it yourself, you can try reloading the Operating System (OS) for the device.
You can find steps on how to do this here: http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-
If you follow those steps entirely, you should have no problems getting back up and running. ![]()

Krypto,
I have the same issue with my Torch on Rogers. I cannot get into my SMS anymore without getting this error. And in fact, I updated the software as per your post, and still, error is happening.
I cannot use the SMS inbox, how can I fix this?

I am getting the exact same error in the exact same application. It just started last night when I was texting someone during the football game. tried reinstalling the OS Update but did not work. I am trying to delete all my SMS messages and hope that clears it, but I have not found a way to delete the SMS messages without actually going into the SMS app, something I cannot do because of the error.
How can I clear all SMS history without going into the application? I tried renaming the DB file on the device and restarted more than once and cannot get rid of this error.

I reinstalled and downgraded to the original platform that I had when I bought the device and the java error is gone. This worked when reinstalling the updated platform did not work for me earlier.
I am not going to upgrade to the latest release as the error showed up the day after I installed the update and started texting heavily again. I was using Text Messaging heavily before the update with no java error or problems, and the java error is crippling as it makes text messaging unusable, and that does not work for me. I think I might hang tough until the update to the update comes out..

Where did you find the previous software version for your Torch? I just got my Torch last week, and did not do any software upgrades to it, before i got this SMS error

You may have the update already installed if you just got your phone.
I did the downgrade from Blackberry Desktop Software (Click "device" then "update my device") you will get to a selection screen that will allow you to Downgrade to the previous version of the platform.
It might not neccesarily be a problem with the recent update, it just points that way based on my experience, and the error could very well be just a coincidence. It may be that re-running the device update rather than the original OS Install (i.e the downgrade) does not replace the neccesary files to get SMS and java reset properly. Downgrading / reinstalling the OS is a pretty heavy hammer to use to fix a problem like this, but it worked..
But you should see my Outlook calendar on the PC after it synched again..heh, I got duplicates of all my appointments in there now..
but my Text Messaging works again, and I did not lose any data except my SMS history.. even the Call Log was intact..

Interesting that 3 of you have seen this problem. I'm going to see if I can get any more info. If you don't mind, can you all let me know what OS version this is happening to? You can find your OS version under Options > About.
Thanks!

I am back to .141 now, I was running .246 when I got the error. I got the error when I was sending a text to multiple receipients during the MNF game when the java error started. One of the peoole I sent the text/SMS to said that the message he got on his side was something wih "$" and letters in all caps, more like code instead of random garbage characters....fwiw
