Trying to download apps on BlackBerry App World w/o success :-(

Hi there -

It's a bit of a newbie question here... I am currently trying to download apps via BlackBerry App World.  Got the browser plug-in (step 1 OK) but then on step 2 (connect your smartphone) it is not working - even though I have it connected w/ media synch option on via USB to my laptop.  It says that device radio is off, which it isn't (I did put in a prepaid SIM card I have from an Argentinean operator which can roam on Rogers, Bell or Telus over here - I picked Rogers).

Can anyone offer any insight?  BTW, I got to this point because I tried before downloading it straight from my Torch via WiFi and it insisted that I should have a radio connection on, so I finally put on a SIM card (believe it or not I was initially playing with this as a mini PlayBook ;-).

Any help will be appreciated.

Cheers -

Ronald

you need a BlackBerry dataplan to use app world to get any apps from BlackBerry App World.

Re: Trying to download apps on BlackBerry App World w/o success :-(

Thanks for your reply - but I'm curious about 3 things:

1- Assuming I just have a data plan w/ a Canadian carrier (let's say Rogers) - not a Blackberry specific plan - just a generic data plan that can be used/shared between a feature phone or mobile modem stick for a laptiop - would this work?

2- If not, is there a hack to get it anyway via that?  I do not necessarily need / want to get a Blackberry specific plan - I can get my e-mails via mobile web w/o the need to go through my company's BES, nor do I feel that I should HAVE to get a Blackberry specific plan just for the sake of downloading some free apps...

3- If I were to decide to get the absolute minimum plan, will this transaction itself (i.e. the downloading of an app) trigger any charges on my mobile bill (assume Rogers)?  I.e. if the application is a freebie, will there be a data charge or will the download count towards my monthly quota?  Because I am really doing the download via my PC which is connected to the Internet - not the Torch device itself?

My point on item 3 being - normally, I would have always assumed that I could download apps to a PC and then synch the PC and the Blackberry device and upload the apps.  I can do this with MP3 files, so I don't see why it should be any different w/ an application.  For an HTC Touch model that I have on Bell Mobility, for instance, I can go and download any WinMo app from the app store and then synch it up with my HTC w/o having to even have the radio turned on...

Thanks again for all your help!

From what I understand, to get BB App World apps on your Blackberry and to use them, you need a data plan. Whether it's Blackberry or iPhone specific depends on your carrier.

Rogers (in Canada) offers a Data Pass which is available for browsing, email, instant messaging and application use however I am unsure if that is available without a contract on a pay as you go plan.
