Unread mail icon still showing after opening Messages

Just recently my Torch 9860 keeps showing the unread mail icon (with the red asterix) in the top banner after I have opened the Messages application and closed it.  Even if I don't open any of the unread messages, the red asterix icon should still disappear.

 

This behaviour does happen on the Messages icon but not on the yellow mail envelope on the top banner.  I have tried a battery pull but no luck.  Only when there are no unread messages does the icon in the top banner disappear completely.

After a bit more investigation, it is the Desktop folder which is causing the problems and not the Messages.  When I go into the Desktop folder and close back out, the red/white asterix remains but it should disappear and leave the plain yellow envelope.

 

How can I resolve this with my BESX email account?
