Bluetooth earpiece keeps dropping connection

My Plantronics Discovery 975 bluetooth earpiece is dropping connections so often that it's useless.  I connect it, usually having to try multiple times, finally get it connected, then go to make a call - but it drops the connection before I can even start a conversation.  Usually the bluetooth status will still show "connected", but the sound is coming from the BB not the earpiece.

 

This problem started when I got my new Plantronics 975 a few weeks ago.  I didn't have this problem with the original one, which worked fine until I dropped once too often.  I suspect my problem is in the 975, but I thought I should look into other possible causes before I start complaining to the seller.

 

Reboots didn't fix the problem, nor did deleting then re-adding the bluetooth device; setting changes in Options / Bluetooth had no affect.

 

My BB is on v5.0.0.975 (bundle 1600, platform 4.2.0.424).  Would an OS upgrade help?

 

Any other suggestions?
