If you want to ADD an app to your phone use either the Applications folder (if it appears on the list) or the Download folder. Any app you download to your phone will go into your Downloads folder. To move it to your Home screen from DL folder simply highlight the icon, press the BB menu key and select Move to Folder, then select Home. If you're referring to your Desktop with the 6 icons along the bottom of the screen, I believe that's the most you can show without using Full menu...

Kudos for your answer. I had been moving apps out of download into new folders with the name of that app. Now I can move them directly to the home page. That's nice.
I tried to give you a kudos, but I don't see any option for doing so. Where is the kudos button? OK, I see that if you press the star, you get an icon-- so, I gave you one.

i guess i should rephrase my question: Can you add more than (6) icons to the main page (home page) on the front of the phone?

Andy,
I have added more than 6 icons to the home screen. Maybe the theme you are using is preventing you from doing so. I am using the iberry slide theme, and have had no problem adding any number of icons. It's a really neat theme-- you can preview e-mail messages and calendar events on the home page. I hope that helps.

Sometimes definitions get in the way of getting to the answer you need... The top-most screen is the one you see when you hit the back button until it doesn't go any higher up... This is sometimes called the home screen, but the screen you see when you press the BB menu key displays your home folder. If you are in a folder under that level and you hit the BB menu key and select "move to folder" you'll see an option to move the icon to the home folder. I don't know the functional limit to the number if icons the home or other folder might hold...
When adding applications, the icon will appear in the folder you select in the options menu for the download folder. This folder can be any of your choice including the default folder used by BB when new call (what else) downloads
It's all pretty much up to you!

Just picked up a Tour over the weekend. I had a curve previously which had 18 icons on the home screen.
I searched the web and found a theme for purchase for 5 bucks that restored the ability to have 18 icons on the home screen again. here is the link http://software.crackberry.com/product.asp?id=3748

wpbrink -- I felt the same when I picked up my Tour. I finally found the little gem posted, free.
OTA link: http://tourthemes.com/18/com_plazmic_theme_18_icon
This gives you a total of 18 (slightly smaller than default) icons on the home page. Note that you'll probably have to move the icons around to suit your needs. (Highlight, then go to MENU > MOVE, move the icon to the position you want then click the trackball.)
Cheers

i downloaded the .jad file from my blackberry tour but i cant get or find the program now on my phone......where or how do i find it on my phone?

wpbrink -- Sorry, incomplete instructions.
After installing the JAD, go to OPTIONS > THEMES. You will have a new theme "18 ICON THEME". Highlight that theme and either go to MENU > ACTIVATE or just click on it with the trackball. After about 5 seconds, that new theme will be active.
Return to your home screen, THEN move the icons around to suit your needs. (Highlight, then go to MENU > MOVE, move the icon to the position you want then click the trackball.) You'll have 18 icons on the home screen, in the "Zen" style.
You can then change background images to suit your taste. I've found a simple background easiest to view with the 18 icons, but then my eyes are getting older...
After you have the process down, you can experiment with different themes. A google search such as "free tour themes" will turn up a number. Alwyas be sure to look at posted comments, if any attached to the posts. You'll find that all who post such themes for the community mean well, but there are occasional glitches that pop up.
FYI: I found this theme via http://tourthemes.com/free-themes/free-blackberry-
There are many sites that post useful (and many free) applications and themes. One tends to lead to another. Good starting points are crackberry.com, berrycool.com, berryreview.com, just to name a few. Depending on how much time you have to view (and how economical your data plan is) you might want to look at Viigo.com -- a feed reader for your Blackberry. It can be set up to pull in posts from a multitude of sources. Go to Viigo.com for the basics. I'll cut off here before I get too boring.
Last note. If you download a theme and don't like it, delete it. It will take up valuable memory. (Go to OPTIONS > ADVANCED OPTIONS > APPLICATIONS > (select the theme, usually beginning with com_plasmic..) > MENU > DELETE. You will be advised to reboot to finish the delete. Accept.
Hope all this helps.
