February 5, 2009-Questions
Q1. Can the BlackBerry DB backup tool be run while the BES is running?
A1. Yes
Q2. Are spaces required in the command line syntax?
A2. Yes, where indicated in the example.
Q3. Can the SQL authentication be done none clear text?
A3. No
Q4. Is there a way to turn off SMS text messaging capabilities from within the Blackberry manager?
A4. Yes, this can be done via IT Policy, which will be covered in a later chapter.
Q5. Will we be covering the Blackberry MDS and Collaboration service in more depth, later in the course?
A5. Yes
Q6. What is the RIM recommended interval for the various Backup types?
A6. As often as possible, daily.
Q7. What would be going on that would cause us to need to use the Handheld Cleanup tool?
A7. User mailboxes are moved from one Exchange Server to another.
Q8. What are the performance ramifications for using the various utilities, can they all be run at 2pm on a Tuesday, or should they be run in the middle of the night? What are the ramifications of the utility failing?
A8. The utilities do not cause much of a performance hit in any system that is currently out there. If any utility fails, you would want to
further investigate why the failure occurred.
Q9. Are we going to go into greater depth on What MAPI profiles are, and an example of what is contained in one?
A9. MAPI Profiles allow the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to communicate with Exchange Mailboxes.
Q10. Why are there two default MAPI profiles and what is the difference between them? When should we use one over the other?
A10. They both contain the same information in most cases; the one called server is what the services used.
Q11. When do you resend the Peer to Peer Encryption Keys or why would you resend?
A11. If a user or multiple users are getting decryption errors when sending /receiving pin messages.
Q12. How do you know if you’re authenticating using Windows or SQL?
A12. Through BlackBerry Server Configuration Tool.
Q13. If the handheldcleanup is used, does the server still have to be rebooted when a user's mailbox is moved?
A13. No
Q14. How do you add users to different groups?
A14. You can't.
Q15. What are the ramifications of using an enterprise Peer to Peer encryption key, vs the Global encryption key? Does this mean that my users will no longer be able to PIN to users that are not connected to my BES?
A15. Correct - Pin to Pin communication will only be available to users within your org.
Q16. If my organization needs to be able to PIN to just one other specific organization, is there a way for me to sync a Pin key with another Blackberry administrator?
A16. No
Q17. How do you truncate the log files?
A17. If you open up the Configuration Panel and the Logging Tab, select the Debug Log size and select the number to specify the size of the log file you want created.
Q18. When adding users to groups, does it require any action from the user? Or, can it be managed remotely?
A18. All administration is done from the manager ends, there is no user impact.
Q19. I did not setup this BES server but am now responsible for administering it. How can I tell if I am using MSDE or SQL?
A19. If you open Add/Remove Programs you will see Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine or Microsoft SQL Server.
Q20. Can you give me an example of how doing this backup would be used in a disaster recovery scenario?
A20. If you backup your configuration database, and then your SQL server crashes with complete loss of data, you can restore the backed up configuration database to get the user information back.
Q21. How big can I expect the backup file to be?
A21. Size depends on the amount of users. The more users, the larger the backup file.
Q22. What is in the BCDB? Will this backup allow me to restore everything I need? If I backed this up and put it on a tape and my BES server caught fire, would I be able to restore with this? I assume I would have to install BES first of course.
A22. Yes
Q23. You said when we make changes to Exchange Mailboxes, we can print the changes to the screen. What does this do? If we move mailboxes do we need to run the handhelpcleanup.exe?
A23. When you move you do need to run the handheldcleanup.exe.
Q24. Are there any drawbacks or problems with managing several different domains from a PC, i.e., an Administrator's personal workstation with multiple BB Managers running on it?
A24. The BlackBerry Manager can only connect to one configuration database, and you can only install one instance of the BlackBerry Manager on a machine.
Q25. Under what circumstances would you use Local Ports to manage a user? Could you explain why a user would have a locally connected BB device and also BB Manager running?
A25. If the administrator is activating devices before they are given to users, he can activate them quicker through the BlackBerry Manager. A wired activation takes less time to activate then a wireless activation.
Q26. Will the handheld cleanup work for moving users between Exchange stores on the same server?
A26. No, you will need to restart BES services, or assign them to a static agent.
Q27. What are the correct permissions users need on the config db in order to send messages?
A27. The permissions are not set against the configuration database when sending messages, they are AD permissions.
Q28. What does BB Backup do beyond what the DB Backup does? Is it a superset of DB backup?
A28. BlackBerryBackup.exe backs up the information stored in the users mail store, where BlackBerryDBBackup.exe backs up the configuration database.
Q29. Will a usb hub work for wired connections from the BBM?
A29. Yes, but it should be a powered USB Hub.
Q30. Does the hand held cleanup tool get installed with blackberry manager?
A30. The Handheldcleanup tool will be located in the "Utilities" folder after you install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. This folder will not be installed if you select the BlackBerry Manager only installation type.
Q31. Does the handheldcleanup.exe need to be run if you move users from one mailbox store to another mailbox store within the same Exchange Server?
A31. The handheld configuration tool will not be able to detect a move between Exchange Mail Stores on the same Exchange Server. This is because the tool checks the ServerDN information for users (which would not change from store to store). The easiest method to detect these changes is to temporarily put the user on a static agent. On startup, the new BlackBerry messaging agent will detect the correct location.
Q32. You mentioned the handheld cleanup tool will not help when moving a user from one store to another on the same exchange. Does this mean the handheld has to be reactivated instead?
A32. No. The user whose mailbox has been moved can be moved to a static agent. This will establish a new MAPI connection to their mailbox. Once they are up and running, you can remove them from the static agent.
Q33. Can you explain the FixMapiSvc tool?
A33. This tool will be covered during a later chapter relating to troubleshooting a BlackBerry Domain.
Q34. So I understand this better the handheld cleanup should be run when you migrate your exchange server from exchange 2003 to exchange 2007?
A34. Correct. In any scenario in your environment where the ServerDN changes for your users you would want to run this utility.
Q35. Can you go into a little more detail about what blackberrybackup actually backs up? It states it backs up the entire BES and all user information. Isn't user info stored in the database?
A35. User information is store in both the database and the user's Exchange mailbox. This utility is used to backup the hidden BlackBerry of the user's mailbox.
Q36. When running the IEMStest.exe utility, does it have to be run from the cmd prompt?
A36. You can run IEMSTest.exe outside the command prompt, however the command prompt that appears will close prior to being able to review the results of the test.
Q37. What is the command for backing up a single user’s smartphone from the cmd utility, and can results be seen?
A37. Page 111 of the self study guide has detail instructions on how to run the blackberrybackup.exe utility for just one user; it will output the results to a text file you can read. Please note that this does not perform a backup of the BlackBerry smartphone. This will only backup information about the BlackBerry user's account. To further clarify, the command would be similar to this: blackberrybackup -u -o "c:\test.txt" -d "user name" -n <bes name>. The output will only be readable by the blackberrybackup utility, not for human eyes.
Q38. We have two BES servers in two separate domains with a trust between the forests. Is there any way to move users from one BES in one domain to the other BES in the other domain without a complete wipe and reactivation of the handhelds on the the new BES?
A38. Both BlackBerry Domains have different databases. Because of this a handheld security wipe would be required before you could activate the user on the destination server.
Q39. If you don't install IM services when installing the BES will you not have the Collaboration Service tab?
A39. The Collaboration Tab will not exist if it is not selected on the installation.
Q40. We have to manually clear out the log file. T-Support said at one point there was no solution to automatically purge the log files. Is this still true?
A40. You can set a maximum age for log files, and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will automatically delete them. This is configured via the BlackBerry Server Configuration utility.
Q41. If you change the location that the BES saves its logs files to on an existing installation, do the old log files get moved to the new location automatically?
A41. The old log files will not get moved automatically after the log location is changed. They will still remain in the previous location.
Q42. I've used a command called OSQL in the past to backup and restore the configuration database. Does this no longer exist? Has it been replaced by BlackberryDBBackup.exe?
A42. OSQL still exists for MSDE. The BlackberryDBBackup.exe is a script that uses OSQL to backup the database.
Q43. How do you add additional Exchange servers to an existing BES?
A43. If the Exchange Server is added to the same domain of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the users are added to AD, the user will be displayed when attempting to add them to the BES.
Q44. How long will they stay in the Pending delete?
A44. This is not a set value; they will remain in pending delete until the blackberryagent is able to complete the deletion process.
Q45. Where can one find the exact profile name for the MAPI profile name option for handheldcleanup?
A45. The BlackBerry Server Configuration Panel will show the MAPI profile.
Q46. On the levels where there is a tab for Role Administration, I don't have that, I have Upgrades..why is that?
A46. The user that you are logged into the BlackBerry Manager does not have permission to see the Role Based Administration.
Q47. Does the BlackBerry server have to be a member of AD Domain?
A47. The name of the machine should be added automatically to AD when to add the machine to the domain. The GBES does need to be part of the domain in order for message flow to function properly.
Q48. Does attachment server have to be connected to the internet?
A48. No, the attachment server does not need to connect to the internet.
