February 12th Question and Answers-Chapter 4

[ Edited ]

February 12, 2009-Questions

Q1.  It sounds like doing a backup with desktop manager does a more complete backup than the wireless backup.  Is this true?
A1.  Performing a full backup using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager will save all data that is saved on the BlackBerry Smartphone.

Please refer to the following Knowledge Base Article for further information on what is saved during a wireless backup:

http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB11202&sliceId=1&docTy...

Q2.  What is the function of Reload User?
A2.  Reload User will stop and start processing information for that user.

Q3.  Is the Peer to Peer Encryption Key for PIN messages only?
A3.  Yes the Peer to Peer Encryption Key is only for PIN messages.

Q4.  Can you import filters from files and apply them to groups?
A4.  There is currently no option to import group filters into the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software.

Q5.  Explain Message pre-population again and why I may need it.
A5.  Before you assign BlackBerry Smartphones to users, you can configure the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to add messages that users previously sent and received on supported BlackBerry Smartphones. You can add messages for new users and for users whose PINs change when they receive replacement BlackBerry Smartphones.  When the BlackBerry Enterprise Server adds messages to a BlackBerry device, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server applies the message filter rules and redirection settings for the user account.

Q6.  If a user has filters defined, will policy based, group based, etc. filters overwrite or merge with the user defined filters?
A6.  Message filters are used to specify the types of messages that are forwarded to your BlackBerry Smartphone and how they are forwarded.  Filters are applied in the order that they appear in the filters list. If no filters apply to a message, the default filter is applied.  Global filters are applied before user-defined filters.

Q7.  What is the best way to re-sync a BlackBerry Smartphone that has not communicated to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software greater than a day if the user wants to retain their settings?
A7.  If the user has not received messages to their BlackBerry Smartphone, the Administrator should verify if the pending count or messages filtered are increasing for the user from the BlackBerry Manager.  The BlackBerry Smartphone may not have proper signal strength to receive data, even though the BlackBerry Smartphone is able to make and receive phone calls.  Also, some other possibilities are that a filter could have been created or folder redirection is turned off.

Q8.  Does the Filter allow more than one Level 1 Notification? Like Level 2 Notifications?
A8.  No.  The only option available is a Level 1 Notification.

Q9.  When you re-apply a group template, do you have to reconfigure the user's settings if you had changed them?
A9.  When you move a user into a group and apply the group template, the user settings will now receive the properties of the group.

Q10.  When using the wireless Enterprise Activation method, is the Enterprise Activation password case sensitive?
A10.  Yes.  The wireless Enterprise Activation password is case sensitive.

Q11.  When a new user is created, can a user be also be assigned to a group?
A11.  A user would need to be added to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server before they can be moved to a group.

Q12.  When removing a user from a group, does the user loose the properties that were configured for that group?  Also, can a user overwrite the settings set in the group properties?
A12.  When a user is removed from a group, the user will retain the properties that were configured for that group until they are moved into another group with a different set of properties or modified on a per user basis.

Q13.  Is hard delete configured at the server level?
A13.  Yes.  Hard Delete support is enabled only at the server level and not at a user level.

Q14.  Can a user belong to multiple groups?
A14.  No.  IT Policies and Software configurations can also be assigned at the group level and would cause a conflict when assigned to multiple groups. Therefore, multiple groups or nested groups are not a possibility.

Q15.  What does Reload User do when compared to removing and adding the user to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server again?
A15.  If you remove and re-add a user, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will stop processing that user's mail, organizer data, etc.  Then the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will remove the user from the BlackBerry Configuration Database.  It will ask the Administrator to remove BlackBerry Information from the user's mailbox.  When the user is re-added to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, they are added back into the BlackBerry Configuration database and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server begins processing the user account again.  So essentially Reload User performs the same steps as a remove/re-add, but leaves the user's account within the BlackBerry Configuration database.

Q16.  Does having multiple users in a group belonging to different Wireless Providers create a problem?
A16.  No.  The BlackBerry Enterprise Server can support BlackBerry Smartphones from different Wireless Providers.

Q17.  Can you restrict a function like the camera on the BlackBerry Smartphone for a group? Or do you have to make a new IT policy and assign that to that group?
A17.  A new IT Policy would need to be created and assigned to the group to restrict the camera on the BlackBerry Smartphones.

Q18.  What is the impact of having different types/models of BlackBerry Smartphones in same group?
A18.  There is no impact to groups if there are various models of BlackBerry Smartphone are belonging to a group.  However, some BlackBerry Applications are only designed to use specific BlackBerry Smartphone software.  Such as:  an application may not get installed on some BlackBerry Smartphones when assigning a Software Configuration because different BlackBerry Smartphones from multiple Wireless Providers will have different BlackBerry Smartphone software version.  Keep in mind that this is more of an impact to Software configuration and not so much an impact to group membership.

Q19.  Is it recommended to place all the BlackBerry Users into a group, even though they would have the same settings?
A19.  It would be recommended to place BlackBerry users in groups if the settings applied to them are non-default or custom.  Otherwise, there would be no benefit placing BlackBerry Users in groups if they will be using default settings.

Q20.  Is there is a set time increment for the push to "refresh" at the group level?
A20.  When a BlackBerry User is added to a group, the settings will be pushed automatically.  If the group template is changed, BlackBerry Users already in that group will not have those settings applied to them until a manual refresh is performed.

Q21.  How many days can you go back during message pre-population?
Q21.  It is a maximum of 14 days or 750 messages for message pre-population.

Q22.  Will making a change on the user level override the settings at the group level?
A22.  The settings will remain the same if it was set at the user level.  However, when changes are made at the group level and a refresh of the group template is performed, the setting would then be overwritten by the group settings.

Q23.  Can you pre-populate a user's BlackBerry e-mail again if the device gets wiped without doing a delete/re-add from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server?
Q23.  By default pre-population of messages will occur when a user is removed and re-added to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or when a PIN change has occurred.  Please refer to the following Knowledge base Article for further information on how to enable message pre-population for all users on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server:

http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB04713&sliceId=2&docTy...

Q24.  Where are the BlackBerry Enterprise Server logs created?
A24.  By Default, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server logs are saved in the following directory:

C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Logs directory.  PIN and SMS logs are also stored in the same directory path a value is not specified in the Audit Root Directory of the Sync Server (Server-Edit Properties-Sync Server-Audit root directory).

Q25. What versions of VMware server for BlackBerry Enterprise Server support?
A25.  The BlackBerry Enterprise Server and its components support the following virtual environments:

-VMware® ESX Server version 2.5.2 or later

            -VMware ESX Server version 3.0.1

            -VMware ESX Server version 3.5

The same limits apply to the supported VMware ESX server versions as to a physical machine.

Q26.  Is SMS, PIN logging on by default?
A26.  No.  SMS, PIN logging will need to be enabled via an IT Policy.

Q27.  Can you assign more than 1 IT policy to a BlackBerry Smartphone?
A27.  Only 1 IT Policy can be assigned to a BlackBerry Smartphone.

Q28.  Is a Level 1 Notification like a PIN-to-PIN message?
A28.  Yes, PIN Messages are considered Level 1 Notification.

Q29.  What access is required to change the columns to view in the BlackBerry Manager?  Will the changes made to columns be made for all Administrators?
A29.  This setting only applies to the user you are currently logged in as.

Q30.  Are logs purged from the server from a setting on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or manually deleted by an Administrator?
A30.  The PIN/SMS and Phone Call logs will need to be deleted manually.  However, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Debug logs can be configured to purge automatically after a set number of days through the BlackBerry Server Configuration Panel.

Q31.  Why it is when mail is moved to a *.pst file, it still appears on the BlackBerry Smartphone?
A31.  The most common cause of this is that hard-delete support is not enabled on the BlackBerry Enterprise server.

Q32.  Can the BlackBerry Smartphone software be upgraded from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server?
A32.  In the BlackBerry Manager, BlackBerry Smartphone software can be reloaded or upgraded using a USB connection.  The ability to upgrade the BlackBerry Smartphone software wirelessly is a feature that is not currently available.

Q33.  Can a Level 1 Notification message be setup for an email addresses?
A33.  Level 1 Notification messages can be specified on regular email addresses as well.  It all depends on the filter that is created by the user or Administrator.

Q34.  Can a group template be updated automatically over a certain period of time?
A34.  When adding a user to the group, the settings will be pushed automatically. When changing the group template, users already in that group will not get the new settings until a manual refresh is performed.

Q35.  Does SMS Logging keep track of the messages on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, or record the content of the message so that all SMS messages would be re-synchronized back to the BlackBerry Smartphone should the user get a new BlackBerry Smartphone?
A35.  The SMS Logging information is stored a *.csv file. However the SMS database is on the BlackBerry Smartphone which is wirelessly backed up.

Q36.  What are some methods in verifying a BlackBerry Smartphone's connection to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server if the last contact time is far in the past?
A36.  An Administrator can resend service books, an IT Policy, or send a message from the BlackBerry Manager.  However the BlackBerry Smartphone should not have a last contact time that far in the past unless the wireless radio is off or there is an issue accessing the user's mailbox.

Q36.  Where can we find information about Hard-Delete support?
A36.  Please refer to the following Knowledge Base Articles for further information:

http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB04853&sliceId=2&docTy...

Q37.  When a user is moved from one server to another server, does the Reload User command need to be performed?
A37.  No. The Reload User command is not necessary as the BlackBerry Enterprise Server should be able to detect the changes.

Q38.  Will Hard Delete Reconciliation also catch messages moved to a non-reconciled folder?
A38.  If the "non-reconciled" folder is within the mailbox, then the message would be removed from the BlackBerry Smartphone even without hard delete support.

Q39.  Is there a way to use the <confirm> in subject line, so that it doesn't actually get seen by the end users?
A39.  No. The <confirm> message would remain in the user's mailbox and be sent to the BlackBerry Smartphone.

Q40.  In what situation can an Administrator use the Assign Device feature in the BlackBerry Manager?
A40.  The Assign Device option in the BlackBerry Manager would be used when a BlackBerry Smartphone is attached to the BlackBerry Manager to perform a wired Enterprise Activation.

Q41.  How do you eliminate the peer-to-peer key option so that users can freely send PIN messages to other BlackBerry users outside of the organization?
A41.  From BlackBerry Domain, select the Global tab and within the Service Control & Customization section.  An option to update Peer-to-Peer Encryption Key will be available.  Click on the radio button to remove the existing corporate encryption key.

Q42.  How do you restore a backup of a BlackBerry Smartphone from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server?
A42.  Automatic wireless backup copies BlackBerry Smartphone user settings and data from the BlackBerry Smartphone to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server automatically. These settings and data can be later restored to the BlackBerry Smartphone during the Enterprise Activation process.  Automatic wireless backup is enabled on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server by default.  Automatic wireless back up allows administrators to wirelessly restore settings and data if the BlackBerry Smartphone experiences a problem.

Automatic wireless backup allows settings and data that are not already stored in the mail system to be backed up.

Q43.  Can a user belong to more than one group?
A43.  No.

Q44.  Is there a method that an Administrator can create or generate a report showing the different BlackBerry Smartphone models on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server?
A44.  An Administrator can use the BESUSerAdminClient.exe from the BlackBerry Resource Kit to obtain BlackBerry Smartphone information.

Q45.  How is the Wireless Backup option enabled for the BlackBerry Smartphone?
A45.  From the BlackBerry Manager, select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.  Select the User's tab and click on Edit Properties of the user on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.  From the PIM Sync section, Automatic Wireless Backup can be enabled or disabled.

Q46.  Is there a way to backup user data on the BlackBerry Smartphone before performing a security wipe and reactivating the user on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server?
A46.  Use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software to perform a backup of the BlackBerry Smartphone.  Otherwise, the calendar, address book, memos, tasks, will re-appear after the Enterprise Activation process has completed.  If the user account is not removed from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the Automatic Wireless backup feature is enabled for the user, the user's settings on the BlackBerry Smartphone will be restored after wireless Enterprise Activation.

Q47.  Which action will take precedent regarding pre-population by messages age versus pre-population by message count?
A47.  The BlackBerry Enterprise Server will populate a user's message database based on which action will occur first.  For example, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server pre-population is configured for 14 days and 750 messages.  The user's inbox contains 1000 current messages for today.  When the BlackBerry Smartphone is Enterprise Activated, it will pull down the first 750 messages for the 1 day and not the 7 days, as this is the limit that was specified by the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Q48.  What is wireless message reconciliation?
A48.  The BlackBerry Enterprise Server synchronizes changes in message status between users BlackBerry devices and the email applications on their computers. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server reconciles message moves, deletions, and indicators for read and unread messages every 15 minutes. By default, wireless message reconciliation is turned on.  If wireless message reconciliation is turned off, the changes made on the BlackBerry Smartphone will not be wirelessly updated in the user's mailbox and vise versa.

Q49.  Is it possible to adjust the messaging pre-population options for individuals rather than at the server level?
A49.  No.

Q50.  Will the BlackBerry Enterprise Server have to be restarted in order to enable hard delete support?
A50.  After turning on hard deletes support on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the BlackBerry Dispatcher has to be restarted or the entire BlackBerry Enterprise Server needs to be rebooted in order for the changes to take effect.
