March 3rd Questions and Answers-Chapter 9

March 3, 2009

Q1: What causes blank fields in the BlackBerry Manager? (Carrier, handheld version, phone number, etc)
A1: The BlackBerry handheld is responsible for reporting its specifications to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on a regular basis. If the information does not appear, it could be a sign that the BlackBerry handheld has not reported its information as expected. This can typically be resolved by deleting then resending the Desktop[SYNC] service book.

Q2: How do you know which log files are for which components? Is there any way to rename them?
A2: A list of all logs and their abbreviations can be found on the logging tab in BlackBerry Server Configuration. These values can also be changed.

Q3: Is there a limit to the number of static agents that can be created?
A3: Technically, there is no limit to the number of static agents. However, since each BlackBerry agent consumes a certain amount of resources the number of agents is limited by your hardware.

Q4: What is the impact of increasing allowed users on the Collaboration Service?
A4: This would increase the amount of connections to your LCS server, so as such you would want to monitor the performance of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and LCS servers after you increase it to ensure everything is stable.

Q5: How do we see what the maximum number of sessions is?
A5: In the BlackBerry Manager - Explorer View, you would select the BlackBerry Instant Messaging Component, and select Edit Properties in the Tasks Pane.

Q6: Where are the collaboration service settings?
A6: In the BlackBerry Manager - Explorer View, you would select the BlackBerry Instant Messaging Component, and select Edit Properties in the Tasks Pane.

Q7: Is the SIP that you are referring to, in any way related to SIP the VoIP service?
A7: The SIP we are referring to is the SIP URI assigned by Microsoft Live Communications Server.

Q8: Where do we set the maximum log file aging?
A8: In the BlackBerry Server Configuration Panel - Logging Tab.

Q9: How does the BlackBerry Enterprise Server deal with ***No Response*** threads? Does it reset the thread?

A9: If a thread is in a non responsive state for 6 health checks, the BlackBerry Controller will restart the affected messaging agent.

Q10: Our exchange servers are overloaded, and there is nothing I can do about that. What are my options from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to minimize hung threads?
A10: Unfortunately, if Exchange cannot respond to BlackBerry Enterprise Server requests in a timely manner, hung threads will be inevitable.

Q11: Can BES be setup to automatically reset hung threads after X number of hung thread indicators?
A11: Yes, by default the BlackBerry controller will restart the BlackBerry messaging agent after 6 health checks if a thread is still non-responsive.

Q12: The pending packets, are those emails or just packets?
A12: These can be any data packets.

Q13: How many devices should be on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server before considering adding a 2nd server?
A13: The maximum users per BlackBerry Enterprise Server are 2000, but other factors come into play such as geographical location.

Q14: Does restarting a Messaging agent restart all of the associated threads?
A14: Yes, a thread is part of a process, so when you stop the process, all of its threads will also be stopped.

Q15: How do we get rid of the Facebook icon on all of our users’ Blackberry Smartphones from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, but nothing else?
A15: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB14650

Q16: What folders are recommended to be backed up on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server?
A16: We recommend backing up the BlackBerry Configuration Database, and logs if necessary, as well as the HKLM\Software\Research In Motion registry keys.

Q17: How do you force a mailbox rescan?
A17: You can do this by restarting the BlackBerry Dispatcher Service.
