Hi,
Is there anyone who could confirm the End of the Lifecycle of Blackberry WebWorks?
I was trying to create apps for blackberry using PhoneCap. However, I noticed it required WebWorks..
On the website I was using, there was a notice that the WebWorks plugin is no longer available and as of 31dec. no longer supported.
I Quote:
"End Of Life Notice: The BlackBerry WebWorks Plug-in will no longer be available for download as of Oct. 18, 2011. Support for the plug-in will be discontinued on Dec. 31, 2011. Read more."
Anyone who could confirm this, and tell me how to proceed for my company? Who is about to use PhoneCap as there perm. cross-compiler.
Kind Regards,
Lars

Hi Lars,
The BlackBerry WebWorks Plug-in for Visual Studio and Eclipse has been End of Lifed... The WebWorks platform is going strong and is not EOL.
We depricated those old tools in favor of the new Ripple Emulator.

I have to say I think the Ripple thing is a poor replacement for the Eclipse based tools. Having to build the metadata for an app (config.xml) file by hand is just not acceptable for a modern platform. Ripple seems like a cheap BB Browser emulator without the capability to run Java extensions like you can on the emulator. Building pure html+JS apps for devices still does not cut it. We could do that a decade ago and HTML5 does not solve all of the issues. You are still going to need to build extensions to access some of the native phone capabilities. PhoneGap will solve easy problems like using the camera. A really good mobile app, except maybe games, are going to need to interact with other apps on the system. Ripple does not solve these problems, so I'll need to fire up the emulator anyway. Maybe relying on Android will solve this issue and we can just build Android apps that run on BB.

RIM are going to make bb development very hard and strange !!
WebWork was very easy tool to bulid a small or personal app with nice interface for those who knows that java is the hardest language in the world , and for fact it is the hardest
while the green robot and the apple making it very easy and simple for developers
keep going RIM ![]()
