In order to register with RIM as vendor they want to have company details. So does that mean, you really have to set up a company before you can register? Isn't that a little bit of overkill for a private developer who does this alongside his normal day job?

You can apply to become a BlackBerry App World Vendor as an individual as well. In the welcome email you receive shortly after your application is complete there should be an attached Notary Form which can be completed and returned to firstname.lastname@example.org. This should be used for individual developers.
