Same problem, but I see the "new on app world" message in my inbox and when I try to open it nothing happens.  when I delete the message the notification icon still remains on my main screen (very annoying for some reason) and the message reappears in my inbox when I reboot.

So the first time the icon disappeared after about a week.  But I have it again, this time for an app I have never downloaded and cannot update.  It has not gone away after updating everything I can in appworld.  Do these notifications use the PIN?  I bought this phone used and maybe the previous owner used these apps?  I have since wiped the device and installed a new OS.

OMFG, just checked the message to see which app was giving me the trouble, it was "battery booster." However I did this while I had no cellular network connection (or SOS mode) and was in the process of connecting to a wifi network and reconciling my inbox. When I clicked the message I got a prompt saying something about no data connection and the message went away!!! And the icon in my "tray" is gone too! I will be superstitious about this and try to replicate the exact same circumstances next time this comes up.

Okay, I've tried every suggestion that has been made and still the icon persists!!  It's been taunting me for months!  Any other suggestions?
