I had the same problem of uploading the newest version of app world and the icon disappearing. There is a solution!!
My phone had version 4 point something of the blackberry software. This does not support the new version of app world. I downloaded from the pc version 5.0.0 of the software. This does not wipe anything on your phone, including pics, music and apps (back them up though just in case!). Once version 5 was installed, I could upload the new app world and the icon was there. You will need to go through your phone and reassign any wallpaper, but ring tones and alerts should be the same. The only app I had to delete and reinstall was Twitter as the icon was missing. Now my phone is as it was with everything in place!! It took an hour to download and set everything back to normal. No need to reset your phone to factory settings.
