Correct. Currently you cannnot enter a "carriage return" or next line in SMS. It has been requested in an update...

[ Edited ]

The Carriage return is not native to SMS or BBMessenger yet.

But here's what I've done.. and it works on the Z10, and should on the Q10.

A minute of setup and it'll be easy for you.

  • Open your Settings (Swipe down from the top bezel) and go to Language and Input.
  • Touch Prediction and Correction.
  • Scroll down and touch Word Substitution.
  • At the bottom touch +Add Shortcut
  • In the first entry box of original word, make it something like "qq" (without the quotes).
  • In the new word or phrase entry, simply tap the lower right carriage return key [↵]
  • Leave unchecked "Always use this capitalization"
  • and click SAVE at the top right.

Now test this in your SMS compose screen... entering the qq you will see a totally blank space key, touch that and it will enter a carriage return as you need.

This also works in BBMessenger.

So you might type in SMS:

Hi qq space

This is John qq space

How are you?

would give you on screen:

Hi

This is John

How are you?

Re: Keyboard

Hi Jsanders,

I figured out an option how it works without workaround (or only little workaround) which works for

  • SMS
  • BBM
  • Whatsapp
  • maybe some other apps

All you need to do is

  1. press and hold the "alt" key until it is locked (alt icon stays on the disply and has a blue background)
  2. Press Enter to make a line break

As long as the "alt" is locked "Enter" will create line breaks when pressed

To exit this "mode" press "alt" again.

This works on my Q10 please let me know if you can confirm this also for the Z10.

Best regards & a happy weekend

Alex

Re: Keyboard

thanks Alex, but no that doesn't work on the Z10. I tested it but there is no ALT key on the Z10, and depressing the number key doesn't do it either.

Thanks for the awesome tip. Great find!

One thing: I assume you took some editing liberties with your example, or please teach me...

When I do this on my Z10, the next line starts with a space. As the %b and %B macros appear to be broken in Word Sub, and I don't see a workaround besides just living with it or remembering to hit backspace once afterwards.

So for me:

Hi qq space

This is John qq space

How are you?

would give you on screen:

Hi

 This is John

 How are you?

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Re: Keyboard

You're right, I do get that same leading blank space on the second line.
