POP 3 email deletes from device when removed from server

I have just discovered that POP 3 email is deleted from the device when it is deleted from the server, (which due to file size), which occurs after a couple of days. I realise now that email behaves differently on the Z10, but I must find a work around for this, or else its a business non-starter for me. Have I misunderstood something. Thanks.

The Z10 uses ActiveSync, which basically reflects the same email as on your server. So, if deleted from the server, deleted from the device.

Can you use an IMAP server? Then, I believe, you could move that message to a folder.
