That's very strange. So on or off, they appear opened. That makes me feel there something else interacting with this outside of your Z10.

Let's see if anyone else has a clue on this.
I don't. It's not happening to me and I haven't seen others mention it.

It really sounds like the Outlook POP client marking emails as read on download issue, but it is somehow occuring with Outlook closed.
There is a thead on that issue here perhaps it may help shed some light on the issue?
If that thread doesn't help, could you provide us with a bit more information? Namely:
1) What type of account is this setup as on the Z10 (IMAP, POP, ActiveSync, etc)?
2) What type of account is setup on Outlook?
3) Are you able to view the account through a Webmail interface of any sort to determine if the email are in fact marked opened on the server itself?
Thanks.

The only time that I saw something like that was when Outlook was using the POP3, and marking as you all said the messages as read once downloaded.
I solved that by using the same IMAP server for Outlook as the phone and Playbook use

Martin, I feel its a server issue as well, having marked them read when downloaded to Outlook, yet he user indicates those desktop systems are shut down and not grabbing email in the middle of the night.
