gmail had been alienating other platforms so users will go to android to get full functionality
I have switched to Outlook.com because of this as it will allow Active Sync for contacts and calendar

Yes I am sure that is true. There is attempted monopolisation of the mobile phone market by both Android and Apple, they need to make their apps exclusive to perpertuate brand loyalty. Unfortunately I have been using android for years. I still use an android tablet(fantastic Motorola Xoom). The Blackberry Z30 is a gift given because my last Android phone didn't work.
It's a shame about Gmail, my contacts, calander and of coursse email are all on this so that I can access everything from anywhere. The Z30 otherwise is a super slick phone, it has great looks and feel in the hand. The sound is superb. The display absolutely fantastic, it has super fast processing power. I love the camara. It actually is able to focus quickly, and you can take one photo followed by another without having to wait at all for the phone to catch up as it saves the last photo taken- it's faster than a high spec bridge camera I own. It has all the essential apps I use (although the blackberry world is extremely limited in the extra apps it covers. And you need to pay for some apps that were free on Android).
It is just the gmail issue that's a real show stopper for me. Changing to other email systems is not an option. We boycott Microsoft at home and are on Linux Ubuntu so I really don't want Outlook/Exchange.

I wonder if you can setup Gmail as an active sync account, you might be grandfathred in from using it on another device
you have to goto advanced setup on making a new account and use m.google.com for the server address
I have it running on my Z10 and playbook still.
