I had similar trouble and not sure what was exact cure but I would suggest to try following:
1) Check whether you have enabled Virtualisation in BIOS (yes, BIOS of your PC). It will drastically improve performance of emulator.
2) There were two ROMs avaialbe at start of Player. I have a feeling that the second one was right choice.
Please let me know whether anything helped

I assume you are working on Linux. I have the same problem. But safe mode works. when start up, type 2 in the second choice.

I am using Windows machine.
And the alpha safe simulator is working in my system. But it's **bleep** slow and the IP of simulator is not detected in IDE even if i enter manually.
I am little frustated about the minimum requirements of the BB 10 developement.
I ordered a new Thinkpad Edge laptop with core i5 processor, but it does have only inbuilt graphic card "Intel HD".
I don't know if BB 10 works perfectly on my brand new laptop ?

1) Make sure you haven't changed path for VMware player and simulator. Try with keeping it at default place. Check paths are correct for the same. I tried this at my end and it worked. Hope it will work for you.
