There is a clear problem with BB desktop manager and Apple LION.
In my case the sorfware istallation fails (even though you can then find it on applications). It then fails to download updates or fails to sync. This is a common and widespread problem.
BLACKBERRY HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THIS PROBLEM FOR SOME TIME AND ARE FAILING THEIR CUSTOMERS.
They may feel that this will in some way stop customers from migrating to iPhone. That is not the issue. More and more business customers (like me) are switching to Apple computers. If they know (as the case at the moment) that Blackberry are not responsive to inoperability issues, then the move will also be made with our office phones. I don't want that as I still feel the BB Torch is a much better business phone.
SURELY THE ADVERSE PRESS AND YOUR SHARE PRICE ARE INCENTIVE ENOUGH TO GET THESE BASIC PROBLEMS SORTED OUT..
PLEASE DO SO.

Hey sjhtorch,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Can you explain what is the full error you're receiving?
Also do you have iCloud enabled?

Hi there,
When i try to install the software from the blackberry site.
It says "the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
However when i go to my finder, in the applications i see the blackberry software icon which opens the desktop manager software. Yet when i use it to update my blackberry, I also get a failure message.
I am pretty sure that icloud is not running.
I look forward to your input.

Hey sjhtorch,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I would suggest uninstalling the BlackBerry Desktop Software and once it's removed.
Locate the following files and delete these:
/Library/Receipts/blackberryvspdr.pkg
/Library/Receipts/blackberrydesktopmanager.pkg
/Library/Receipts/blackberryframeworks.pkg
/Library/Receipts/blackberryusbdriverint.pkg
/Library/Receipts/blackberryvsp.pkg
/Library/Application\ Support/BlackBerry/BBLaunchAgent.app
/Library/Application\ Support/BlackBerry/IPModemPasswordDialog.app
/Library/Application\ Support/Blackberry/BBLaunchAgent.app
/Library/Application Support/BlackBerry
/Library/Modem Scripts/RIM IP Modem.ccl
/Library/Frameworks/RIM_VSP.framework
/Library/Frameworks/RimBlackBerryUSB.framework
/Library/Preferences/com.rim.vsp.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.rim.RIMBBVSP.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.rim.RimBlackBerryUSB.plis
/Library/Preferences/com.rim.RimLaunchAgent.plist
/Library/Preferences/com.rim.BlackBerryUSBDriverIn
/Library/Preferences/com.rim.RIMBBUSB.plist
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.rim.BBLaunchAgent.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.rim.BBDaemon.plist
/Applications/BlackBerry Desktop Manager.app
/Users/<username>/Library/Application Support/BlackBerryDesktop/
/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.rim.blac
/Users/<username>/Library/Caches/com.rim.blackberr
/Users/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.rim.RimL
/System/Library/Extensions/RIMBBVSP.kext
/System/Library/Extensions/BlackBerryUSBDriverInt.
/System/Library/Extensions/RIMBBUSB.kext
Then empty the trash and restart the Mac.
Re-download BlackBerry Desktop Software from www.blackberry.com/desktop and try to install it.

The solution above worked as i have now been able to install the desktop software and get it to update by Torch and do a basic backup.
NONETHELESS PROBLEMS STILL PERSIST ON BASIC FUNCTIONALITY
All very random. I hope that BB are working to acheive better results in the next software release. Most of the posts i have seen seek basic functionality of backups and syncs. Surely this can be achieved by the combined might of the software development team.

I have exactly the same problem as the OP.
I have tried the solution but many of the files aren't present for me (assuming I'm looking in the correction locations). With Lion User libaray folders aren't visible. Hence /users<username>/Library is not an option
I was looking in Mac HD/Library, Mac HD/Applications etc is this correct?
The Mac I'm having trouble installing BB DM on is an iMac running OSX 10.7.2. I also have a Macbook Air on Lion, which took the install perfectly.
I don't have iCloud.
Thank you in anticipation.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for a solution to this maddening problem?

The Library in your "home" folder is indeed invisible under Lion.
There is a command line that you can type in Terminal mode to make it appear :
chflags nohidden ~/Library/

Thank You...Thank You...Thank You. After following your instructions and re-installing DM, it finally works.
However, I went one step farther than you instructions and did a search on my MAC for anything that had Blackberry or RIM in it and deleted everything that the system would let me delete. I figured if I deleted a file that was needed and it didn't work big deal, it wasn't working anyway.
