I got the same issue an hour before heading to the airport on a business trip. so annoying but I am to blame as I should not have applied any updates before a trip. Lesson learned.
As for the solution, I took the following steps which helped me to reset the device and re-configure the synch:
1. Follow the steps to reset your device to the factory defaults as outlined here:
Your device will show a white screen with a message saying Wiping. When finished and fully rebooted, proceed to the next step.On a 32-bit Windows XP to Windows 7 operating system (OS), complete the following steps:
- Connect the smartphone to the computer.
- On the computer, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. (Note: For Windows Vista and 7 you must right click and run as Administrator)
- Type cd C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader and then press the Enter key
- Type loader.exe /resettofactory and then press the Enter key
On a 64-bit Windows XP or Windows 7 OS, complete the following steps:
- Connect the smartphone to the computer.
- On the computer, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. (Note: For Windows Vista and 7 you must right click and run as Administrator)
- Type cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader and then press ENTER.
- Type loader.exe /resettofactory and then press ENTER.
2. On the device, login to your email account settings (Main Menu Page > Setup > Email Setup)
3. Connect your device to the computer
4. Launch DM6 (That's what I'm using)
5. Navigate to Organizer (it will still show "Address Book (not installed)" )
6. Click on "Reset Settings" - Wait until this button is greyed out - You will notice that all settings has been removed.
7. click on "Configure Settings"
8. Configure your Address book first and then save to confirm it is working. You should see your address book is mapped to Outlook (assuming you are using outlook)
9. Configure the rest of the modules (Notes, Tasks and Calendar)
10. Synchronize your device
I hope this helps.

I'm having the same problem. Spent 3-4 hours on it . . .!

I'm having the same problem with the new updated blackberry desktop 6.0, with a 8530 curve. Wasted 3-4 hours and still no answers . . .

I have the 8530 curve and it did the same thing with me. wiped out completely my outlook 2007 contacts on the BB and says address (not installed) on the BB desktop "select organizer data to synchronize" dialogue box. Wasted 3-4 hours on this already . . .

Same problem. I tried going back to a previous software version too and still no contacts. Sucks!

Thanks - your method worked in about 20 minutes - kind of.
At the last stage I got this error:
0x80040fb3
record 1163 of 1171 records
This is an error that Google knows a lot about. More mysteriously, when I tried a battery removal (thanks JSanders) and resync, guess what. Address book (not installed) reappears and cannot be got rid of! Presumably a factory reset would cure the problem again temporarily.
Anyway, I'm now fairly happy with my 1162 of 1171 contacts on my device and I now resign from my guinea pig job on this forum, with thanks fo all.

All:
This happened to me. I am not sure if it was after the latest update to OS 5.xxx or Desktop 6, but whaetver. There's a bug which is causing a LOT of pain.
I tried EVERYTHING on this thread and experienced the same results as some people, but never got my contacts back. I even completely wiped my phone back to factory condition, as my "Contacts" app on the device itself was corrupted and I could not even open it.
My final solution after about three hours: I found a third party software - Companionlink - http://www.companionlink.com/blackberry/.
I downloaded the free trial and it worked perfectly. All my contacts are back in my BlackBerry and sync works great. It costs $40 after the trial, but better than hours of frustration and failure.

I had the same problem and it got it fixed.
First,
In the Blackberry Phone I went to Options, Advanced options, Default Services and I put the same email in the CICAL and the CMIME.
Second,
In the Desktop Software,
Go to Organizer, Configure Settings, Select Address Book and click advanced, in the address book tab choose the Folder mapping Option and select Map Folder, the same email account selected in the CICAL and CMIME on the phone, and add the email contact to the selected folder The remove the one that is there and that is the not installed warning in the address book disappeared and I could sync everything.
Cheers and Enjoy,
Daniel

that sounds great @danyboy8 if the address book were actually *installed* you could get to the configuration settings for address book. unfortunately, with this error.. since the address book does not exist, bb dm does NOT let you into configuration because it thinks there is no address book to configure!
nice idea, but ... doesnt work ![]()
