I cannot get desktop manager to run on a Vista Business machine. DM appears in task manager but seems to hang and never appear. There are no error messages or events in any logs that I can find.
I have completely removed DM and clean up any remaining reg entries or files and re installed it but still no joy.
The user running it is a local admin.
Any ideas?

BlackBerry Desktop Manager abruptly closes when opened from Windows Vista

Just upgraded to DM 6.0.2 and it won't run. Starts to go, shows the Blackberry logo then I get the "WIndows has encountered a problem". I've tried restoring my computer to a date before the upgrade, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling 6.0.2, 6.0.1 and 6.0.0. Something happened with the upgrade that won't allow the install to run.
Help.....please.

same problem with mine. BTW do you have visual studio 6 install in your PC?

Don't have Studio 6 installed. Tech guy at my office was able to fix by locating a DLL file that DM couldn't find. He did this by looking at error logs to find out what was the problem. He found the DLL file which seemed fine. He copied it to another directory, deleted it and then copied it back. The next startup DM "found" the missing DLL file and restarted fine. No problems so far. Wish I could tell you more but hopefully this gets you started. Since he did all the work in his office, I don't know any more than this.

So here's how I fixed my issue.
Delete the Rim.Desktop.exception.log located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data
Run the application, it will crash with the error message above and create a new Rim.Desktop.exception.log file. Open it in notepad and look through it.
In my case the exception was this.
Exception message is: The current build operation (build key Build Key[Rim.Desktop.Shell.MyBlackBerryApplication, null]) failed: Could not load file or assembly 'Rim.Desktop.Services.PolicyManager, Version=6.0.2.44, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies
I followed the suggestion of renaming the file C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Desktop\Modules\Rim.Desktop.Services.PolicyManger.
I then tried to lauch the application and it crashed, you must do this! renaming it back without this step will not work. Then I went back and renamed the dll file back to it's original name Rim.Desktop.Services.PolicyManger.dll and sure enough the application worked.
Must be some messed up reference somewhere, it's stupid and RIM should figure this out before releasing updates. Obviously your issue may be different but the exception.log file should point you in the right direction.

Here's the answer:
http://www.orderstorm.com/general-support/blackber
To resolve the problem try this:
1. From the START menu search for choose how to report problems and click on choose how to report problems under Control Panel.
2. On the Choose when to check for solutions to problems reports window change the selection to Never check for solutions (not recommended)
This will prevent Windows 7 from trying to make connection to the Microsoft site and thus allow the Blackberry Desktop software to open and not hang.
Happy tethering with your Blackberry!
This worked immediately! Thank you OrderStorm!
