Corrupted backup files

Hi, I've only had my BlackBerry Curve 9300 for a couple of months and I'm having problems backing up to my computer. The backup always appears to have been successful (i.e. shows the 'Your backup is complete' message) but when I go to look at the backup files (via 'Device' and 'Restore' from the menu) they always show the message "The selected backup file might be corrupted".

I've tried this on my laptop (Windows Vista) and my PC (Windows 7) but its always the same error.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Corrupted backup files

The backup files (in a *ipd or *.bbb file format) are not viewable on your PC, from any native PC software.

They may be used to restore data to the BlackBerry.

You can alternatively use a PC software named MagicBerry from MenaStep, to extract data out of the backup file for use in a spreadsheet, etc.

Re: Corrupted backup files

Thanks for the reply (J Sanders).

I may have used the wrong choice of words here, when I said... "when I go to look at the backup files..." I actually meant I was going through the restore process (using the 'Restore' option from the 'Device' menu) and looking at the backup files available to restore from. They all appear as 'corrupted'.

Re: Corrupted backup files

Oops, I see and understand now.

I don't know why the file is corrupt. I would still recommend you getting MagicBerry and seeing if you can extract the data from the file. It's free.

Re: Corrupted backup files

Thanks once again 'J Sanders', I will certainly be looking into the MagicBerry option a little later, but in the meantime I want to try and find out what is causing the corruption to my backup files - does anybody else have any ideas of what could be causing this to happen?

Re: Corrupted backup files

When you perform a backup now, do you see any error in the backup at the completion?

What version of Desktop Software are you using?

Re: Corrupted backup files

The version of BlackBerry Desktop Software is 7.0.0.59

I've just tried another backup and everything would appear to have worked - I get a green tick (check mark) and the message "Your backup is complete". However, this latest backup file also shows the message "The selected file might be corrupted" when I use 'Restore' from the 'Device' menu.

Re: Corrupted backup files

Alright, here are a few things to try. First, do the easy one - do a battery pull. While the device is on, remove the battery for 15-30 seconds, reinsert and wait for the device to reboot. Then try the backup again and see if that helps.

If it doesn't help, open the restore menu and select the option for a selective restore. Scroll through the list and see if there are any databases that say they are corrupted or that are greyed out. If there are you'll need to clear those databases later, so make note of them. Once you've scrolled the list, cancel out of that. Now click on the Device menu again and select the option to delete certain databases. Select the databases that were listed as corrupted and delete those. Unfortunately you'll lose the data in those databases, but the data is likely already corrupt on your phone anyhow, so...

And if that still doesn't work, or if no corrupted databases were identified, etc., uninstall the Desktop Software, reboot your computer and then reinstall it again by redownloading it from http://blackberry.com/desktop.

If none of those options works, let me know as there is another option available.

If you want to thank someone for their comment, do so by clicking the Thumbs Up icon.

If your issue is resolved, don't forget to click the Solution button on the resolution!

Re: Corrupted backup files

Hi Krypto, I first tried the battery-pull method, but as with all other attempted backups the backup appears to have worked but the backup file shows as being corrupted.

I then tried to follow the selective restore method but was unable to access the 'Select Data to Restore' area (it was greyed out), presumably because I have no "uncorrupted" backups to go from.

I next tried the "uninstall, reboot, reinstall" method, but still no joy - the backup appears to work but the backup file shows as being corrupted.
