When I click on the desktop icon, the software looks like it is going to open up, but then I get an error message that says this: "Blackberry Desktop Software has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience". I have un-installed it and then re-installed it, but it keeps doing the exact same thing. Any suggestions?

Have you restarted the computer after the install?

Yes I have re-started my laptop...makes no difference

gotcha. Looks like you'll have to try a manual uninstall. Not sure whats wrong.
This will point you in the right direction.
I also recommend after the uninstall, download and do a registry clean using ccleaner.

Keep re scanning the registry until it returns no errors and reboot.

You could consider running windows update too.
